Anorak Crumble : Please tell us about the story of birth of Fadeawayradiate Records. Why did you decided to start label ?
Fadeawayradiate Recordsの誕生ストーリーを教えて下さい。何故レーベルをスタートすると決めたのですか？ Stella : I never did. It kind of happened. One moment I am talking about Sophistipop covers with Ole Aleskjaer of The Loch Ness Mouse, who suggested doing a Scritti Politti tribute as a joke... Next thing I proposed doing cover comp on my Sophistipop Lounge group on FB, and lots of people reacting, wanting to contribute. It was done in six months time. I only started a label page on Bandcamp so we could put it there and make it a free download thing.
Apple Crumble : Please tell us about your band Nah... ? Are you planning to release a new album ?

Stella : Nah... actually started as a result from that Sophistipop cover comp. Sebastian, who has a solo project called The Fisherman and His Soul, was doing a cover and we got talking. At some point he had a song and since he knew that I did some backing for The Loch Ness Mouse/Tenant From Zero cover on the comp, he asked me to consider doing something for a song he had in the making. I did, and Kenji Kenji also joined into that song, and we had such fun that we decided to maybe do a single. The single became an EP and so on ! We were/are quite surprised at the reception of Nah... which was mainly a fun thing. We are no youngsters anymore and are probably never going to be live band. We only just met once ! We are releasing an album (12 tracks by the looks of it), and were very fortunate to be approached by Shelflife Records. It is postponed to september now due to Corona circumstances but it will be the crown on Sebastian’s 25 year long music-hobby efforts ! We will release a new single on june 12th to bridge the gap.

Stella : Good Question. As I explained above, the covers started as a fun thing. People seem quite keen on doing them out of love for that particular style of music, and also because it is fun to be connected to other musicians that share that love. The connection of bands also make the bands get a wider coverage, so in that sense it is good promotion. It makes people that are fans of this or that band, start listening to other bands on the comp etc. But the cover thing is quite complicated because there are copyrights involved. So you cannot do much more with it than free digital downloads. This was the main reason for doing originals on the last F.A.R. Out comp, it made the options for physical release a bit more possible. It was a great success in the end, but the making proved much, much more of an effort than the covers. Also, it got complicated as to how to distribute revenue/copies over 14 bands etc. So this year we are back at a cover comp : very low key, much fun ! We are about to release a Yacht Rock cover comp called Cruise Control, in june.
Anorak Crumble : How is your life in Netherlands ? Are there any good record labels, clubs, etc ?

Stella : It’s fine. There is an indie life, but much more directed at mainstream/danceable indie, more or less a student thing nowadays. No real niches or subcultures, like in the 90's, which is a shame. We have a few nice bands here though.
Anorak Crumble : When did you start to listen to indie pop music ?
いつ頃からインディ・ポップを聴き始めましたか？
Stella : This is a bit weird maybe, but I didn’t grow up listening to alternative music. I was a bit of a disco kid, that was always out and about in the disco's of Amsterdam in the 80's when I was a teenager. At home I listened to Sophistipop, Yacht Rock and Kate Bush, etc. I got into indie when the rave scene started at the end of the 80's and indie became a "proper" thing. At the edge of the Mock Turtles, The Milltown Brothers and Airhead, I suddenly heard Slowdive and a whole new world/era opened up. I immersed deeply into Shoegaze and its scene for years and from there it shifted to Britpop, on to Triphop, Lounge and Drum'n Bass, and then I went into a massive 60's retro pop phase (Siesta, El Records, Le Grand Magistery, etc.)... and then life happened. I was really out of it for around ten or more years. Then in somewhere around 2012 I found The Clientele, and it all slowly started flowing back. In 2014, I started taking some musical initiatives... started a blog and the rest.

Anorak Crumble : What do you think about indie pop all around the world at the moment ?
現在の世界中のインディ・ポップについて、どう思いますか？
Stella : It got very literal, in such respect, that it literally is all about being independent these days. As in even being independent from the independent labels ! The digital age has made it possible for everyone to produce music these days. The downside is that literally everyone does it ! Hahaha... which caused “Indie" an-sich to splinter into all kinds of sub-niches and cultures. So basically like splitting atoms... It’s all good though. I am all for the self-sufficiency and creative freedom of the DIY / bedroom pop movement. Anything is possible !

Carsten Friedrichs : It's Heiko on Drums, Fabio plays the lead guitar, Tim on bass, Gunther plays keyboards and a lot of other instruments and me on rhythm guitar and vocals.
Anorak Crumble : How did you all meet ? Why and when did you decide to form this new band ?

Carsten Friedrichs : When my last band Superpunk broke up I had a few new songs which were pretty good. I asked my colleague and friend Gunther if he would like to arrange these songs with me. So we met in his living room, arranged theses songs
and wrote some more songs. These songs were excellent. We decided to form a new band which became Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen and we recorded the album. Gunther is not only a great musician but he also runs and owns Tapete Records. After a few drinks
we signed to Tapete Records.

Anorak Crumble : How would you describe the music of Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen ? Who writes the lyrics and what are they talking about ?
Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemenはどんなバンドですか？歌詞は誰が書いていますか？
Carsten Friedrichs : Our sound is a blend of styles we like : Punk, Northern Soul, Bubblegum, Ska, Yé-Yé, Garage Rock, Disco, Indie Pop, etc. I write the lyrics. I try to write little stories about things and people. For example about football
("Die Gentlemen Spieler"), about actors ("Kennst Du Werner Enke ?"), about crime ("Der beste Zechpreller der Welt"), about a donkey asylum ("Mrs. Svendsens Heim für Esel"), about little shops that sell matresses ("Der kleine Matratzenmarkt"), about happy spies
("Der glückliche Spion") and about frustration ("Frustration"). You see, songs about the usual stuff.

最新作“Fuck Dance, let’s art !”について教えて下さい。
Carsten Friedrichs : We recorded "Fuck Dance, let’s art !" or "FDLA" as people like to call it at Zwanie Jonsons studio in Hamburg (by the way : you should check out Zwanie's music, you might like it.). It was mixed by Timo Blunck (Palais Schaumburg/Die
Zimmermänner) and Andreas Dorau did some backing vocals. "FDLA" has some pretty decent tunes on it and a great cover artwork. The picture is by Hank Schmidt in der Beek. Somehow "FDLA" managed to sneak into the Geman Album charts for one week. For a moment
we felt like stars. Then we realised it were the German album charts.
Anorak Crumble : Can you tell us about about Tapete Records with which you released your records ? When did the label started ? Who is involved in the label ?
Carsten Friedrichs : Tapete Records was founded by Gunther in 2002. I have the pleasure to work there as well. In all modesty : It´s a fantastic label. For me as a Popmusic enthusiast I can´t imagine a better job. I am a Monochrome Set fan since
I was a teenager and now I am one of the first persons to hear new Monochrome Set songs. I even talked to Bid von Bid once or twice. Ace ! Readers of the Anorak Crumble fanzine might enjoy our new releases by Comet Gain, The Catenary Wires, Robert Forster
or Simon Love for example and our reissues (like Roger Nichols & The Small Circle of Friends, The Times, Die Time Twisters etc.) Over the years we released a lot of great pop music. The same crew also runs a sister label called Bureau B which has it´s focus
on experimental music like Cluster, Kreidler, Martin Rev or Faust.

Anorak Crumble : Can you please tell us about your previous bands : Jesterbells, Die Fünf Freunde, Bruno Ferrari Quintett, Superpunk ?

Carsten Friedrichs : I always had the vision of playing glamorous, sophisticated popmusic. But most of the time the sound was more like Swell Maps with a trumpet. But this was cool too. I really enjoyed being in these bands and some other kids
liked our music too.
Anorak Crumble : Looking back, can you tell us about the Marsh-Marigold Records’ years in the end of the 80’s and early 90’s ? Any good memories you remember ?
Carsten Friedrichs : In the late 80’s we found out that it was possible to release our own records. It was expensive but doable. So we saved our money to release one or two 7". That was the start of Marsh-Marigold. And the best thing about it
: People did buy these records. There were even articles in fanzines about it. How cool was that ? It was a lot of fun being in a Marsh-Marigold band. We played a lot, we played with great other bands from all over Europe, we met likeminded people from all
over the world. A small but worldwide scene with an unique style. That was great. A lot of good memories: Playing with Painting by Numbers in Darmstadt (one of the first Die Fünf Freunde shows), the Marsh Marigold Festivals, a short tour in France and Belgium
with the Acid House Kings, Caramel and Red Letter Day. It needs only three or four chords to have a lot of fun.
80年代終わりに僕達のレコードを出すことは可能だった。高かったけど可能だった。なのでお金を貯めて、1～2枚の7インチをリリースした。それがMarsh-Marigoldの始まりだった。ベストな事は : 人々がこれらのレコードを買えたこと。ファンジンのアーティクルにも載った。なんてクールだったんだろ。Marsh-Marigoldのバンドになることは楽しいことだった。沢山プレイした、ヨーロッパ中のグレイト・バンドとプレイした。世界中の良いマインドの人達と会った。小さかったけどユニークなスタイルのワールドワイドなシーンがあった。グレイトだった。沢山の思い出がある
: Darmstadt (初のDie Fünf Freundeのショウの1つ)でのPainting by Numbersと演奏したり、Marsh-Marigoldのフェスティバル、Acid House Kings, Caramel, Red Letter Dayとのフランスやベルギーでの小さなツアーも。楽しむのにスリーかフォー・コードが必要なだけだった。
Anorak Crumble : What band/artists are you influenced by ? What bands/artists do you listen to at the moment ?
Carsten Friedrichs : One of my biggest, if not the biggest influence is Jonathan Richman. He is a genius. At least for me. My favourite album of all time is "Rockin'& Romance". At the moment I listen a lot to Tropicàlia acts like Os Mutantes
or Caetano Veloso. And I really like the Gary Olson album which will be out on Tapete Records in may. Also a lot on my turntable recently : Der Englische Garten and Nick Garrie´s "The Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas". And I just bought a reissue of "Too late to
turn back now" by Cornelius Bros & Sister Rose... such a great tune ! And some Adriano Celentano records which never fail to cheer me up.

Carsten Friedrichs : As soon as this Corona thing is over we´d like to 1. Go into a pub 2. play live again. And we will write new songs. We already wrote one new song. It's about men with great haircuts.

Anorak Crumble : The tribute Sarah Records compilation album "Our Secret World" was released on your label in 2015. I am very happy to know Chinese people listen to Sarah Records ! When did you start to listen to indie pop music ?
Jovi : When I was about 16 years old, I began to listen shoegaze music such as MBV and Slowdive, and naturally turned to C86 / indie pop. My band Butterbeer at that time wrote a song called "Listening to another sunny day makes me forget you". After rehearsing and returning to school, I thought, "this year is just the 20th anniversary of the end of Sarah records. Why don't we make a tribute ?" So I contacted some of our friends, and some Chinese band might like Sarah, and asked them if they would like to participate in the compilation.
16才の時に、My Bloody ValentineやSlowdive、C86 / indie pop を振り返った音楽やシューゲイズ・ミュージックを聴き始めました。僕のバンドButterbeerは当時、“Listening to Another Sunny Day Makes Me Forget You”っていう曲を書いたんだ。リハーサルの後で学校の帰り道に、"今年はSarah Recordsが終わって20周年の日だ"と思って、トリビュートを作ろうかと。それで僕は、コンピレーションの為に、友達のバンドやSarahが好きな中国のバンドに訊いてみたんだ。
Anorak Crumble : Please tell us about the story of birth of Boring Productions. Why did you decided to start label ?
Jovi : My friends and I loved a label called Full Label in Guangzhou at that time, They have an indie pop band called Yourboyfriendssucks !, they are very DIY, and they do a lot of interesting things. They perform in toilets, roadsides, friends' homes and bookstores, and their publications are also very interesting. Jovi : Let me try to introduce some of the bands you mentioned. A Hidden Trace: solo project of Chinese football's guitarist Xu Bo (he lives in Kyoto now as far as I know). Teenage Riot : they're from my favorite Harbour Records in Hong Kong. They've published two great indie rock / pop records Fuhn : there used to be an indie pop band called Pocketmonster in Guangzhou, Fuhn was the guitarist. Fuhn's wrote a song in the Sarah Records tribute, and his guitar solo was sample from Gentle Despite ! Butterbeer : This is my indie pop band and Chestnut Bakery's vocal Rye. They released a record in Boring Productions. Atta Girl : This is my band with Milkmustache lead singer Jonny, who has released an album and a 7-inch record in Boring Productions. Mikmustache : This is a shoegaze band from Shenzhen. They released an EP in Boring Productions Chestnut Bakery : an indie pop / shoegaze band , released an album and a 7-inch record in Boring Productions. Yourboyfriendssucks ! : one of my favorite bands ! They just released a new EP in Qiii Snacks Records. Thin City : This is a Shenzhen band. The four members are from different countries. The guitarist Graham is from Glasgow. His previous band also made records in the Slumberland Records. Glue, 洪申豪 : they all come from a band called Touring Magazine (it seems quite famous in Japan).
Anorak Crumble : How is your life in ShenZhen China ? Are there any good record labels, clubs, etc ?

Jovi : Shenzhen is a beautiful coastal city, and the food is very rich and delicious. My friend and I like to meet at a record store called Puppet Fat Records. If it's a venue, you must not miss B10.

Anorak Crumble : What do you think about indie pop all around the world at the moment ?
現在の世界中のインディ・ポップについて、どう思いますか？
Jovi : I think it's good every day ! I find a lot of great indie pop records in bandcamp. Labels like Elefant, Shelflife, Firestation, Cloudberry are still publishing great records, and some of the old indie pop label like Sunday records, A Turntable Friend are reborn. I am also a big fan of Make Me Happy from Greece and Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten from Germany.
