Paul Livingston : We were formed in 1986/87. I (Paul) joined in 1987. Before that, Frank and Davy had been involved in a creative course for the unemployed that culminated in a performance for the class. They hit empty trashcans for rhythm and sang a bit of Frank Sinatra. The name was born. They then formed a band with various members from the local scene, who would support other bands. I remember a friend of mine at school told me he had gone to see a band the night before and the support band blew him away. He said they were a ramshackle mess but amazing. And they had a cool name. I felt very lucky indeed when I joined them a few short months later.

Paul Livingston : When we made Cake, we were very focussed on getting it right. Which, conversely, is a bit of a problem when making music. We tried to incorporate all our favourite moments from various demos and tapes. Producers would tell us that was the wrong way to go about things, but we didn't listen. It turned out well enough, but now I can see what those producers were getting at. I've Seen Everything was a far more confident, less obsessive, recording experience. One of our best albums, not least because of Ray Shulman's wonderful production.By the time we did A Happy Pocket, we were dealing with record company issues, and also a bit of an identity crisis, but I love it! It is quite a sprawling record which feels more like a double album to me.Weightlifting was made after we had lost our beloved Shabby Road recording studios. We weren't sure if we would be able to record to our satisfaction in a different studio, but making it was a real boost to our confidence, and it turned out to be one of our best!For In the Music, we focussed more on the feel of the songs, jamming these grooves for hours and days in order to make them more, dare I say it, funky. I would say having the good Grant Wilson on bass and Stevie Mulhearn on keyboards definitely inspired that way of working. The music was recorded live in Stratosphere Studios in New York with Andy Chase producing. For some bizarre reason we didn't tell Andy we wanted to record live until we got to the studio! He was a little taken aback. He said to Rudyard, the engineer, "Can we do that?!", but when we listened to the playback of the first song we'd recorded, we knew we were in good hands. It sounded like a finished record straight off the bat.Wild Pendulum was written and recorded with the help of our talented friend, Simon Dine. He supplied a bunch of sumptuous arrangements and loops, which we turned into the finished songs. We then went to Omaha to record with Mike Mogis. A very rich and dense record.

John Douglas : It took us 8 years to get to a place where we were happy with a bunch of songs. We filled those 8 years with many things. We recorded music in America and Japan.. we played shows.. we moved house.. we changed personnel.. we spent a lot of time in the pub.. mostly we worked on songs and it took us 8 years to finally get a bunch of them that felt right to release. Norman is a great singer and harmonist. He was very friendly and professional in the studio. i think we met through a mutual friend.

John Douglas : We plan to release a full album at some point but its probably a while away. The Covid issues are ongoing and will affect all our future plans in unknown ways.. Its very difficult to think long term because things are so unknown.

John Douglas : We all liked the Smiths. A great band. I guess we are mostly influenced by melodic guitar bands with good lyrics.

John Douglas : Life in Scotland is great. The tap water is delicious. The scenery is magical. In general... the society, though it has some issues, is at peace with itself. There are loads of great venues... record shops are a little harder to find... i wouldn't know about clubs.

Anorak Crumble : Vinyl Japan label released your single "Motorbike Loves You (1993)" EP and your compilation album "Love Compilation (1994)". Why did you sign to this label ?
Vinyl Japanレーベルはシングル"Motorbike Loves You (1993)"とコンピレーション・アルバム"Love Compilation (1994)"をリリースしましたね。何故このレーベルと契約したのですか？

Mr. Tsutsumida : There was a approach from the US label staff... I can't remember well.

Anorak Crumble : 解散後90年代に下田さんと田尻さんは101 Dalmatiansを、堤田さんはThe Palm Songwritersを結成しましたね。これらのバンドについて教えて下さい。
Mr. Tsutsumida : I can't answer because I'm not involved with 101 Dalmatians. The Left Bank 7 inch single is nice including the cover. It's like Dislocation Dance. The Palm Songwriters was the unit of me and Fukuda. We released the 7 inch single on Koga's K.O.G.A. Records. He asked us to make super neo acoustic songs but we couldn't finish very well, so I'd like to try it again someday.
Mr. Shimoda : 101 was formed after Johnny Dee split up, to do more neo acoustic by the band-sounds. With the cooperation of Leftbank: Yamaguchi and Airs: Ito, we released one single, one album and joined several compilation albums.
>堤田：ダルメシアンズについては私は関わっていないので答えられないのですが、あのLeft Bankの7インチはジャケ含めて良いですね。ディスロケライクで好きです。パームソングライターズは、私と福田君のユニットで、古閑君から超ネオアコをというオーダーでK.O.G.Aから7インチを1枚リリースしました。でも超ネオアコになってないのでいつか再チャレンジしたいと思ってます。
>下田：101はJohnny Deeの後によりバンドサウンドなネオアコをやりたくて結成しました、Leftbank：山口氏、Airs：伊藤氏の協力もあり、シングル１枚、アルバム１枚、いくつかのcompilationに参加しました。
Anorak Crumble : In 1994 Tsutsumida and Shimoda reformed the band as Johnny Johnny and released the 12" single "Still I Always..." . Why did you name Johnny Johnny, not Johnny Dee ?
1994年に堤田さんと下田さんはJohnny Johnnyとして再結成し12インチ・シングル"Still I Always..." をリリースしましたね。何故バンド名をJohnny Deeでは無くJohnny Johnnyとしたのですか？
Mr. Tsutsumida : First of all, we recognized Jonny Dee was disbanded then, so I named the band Johnny Johnny...like Southern Death Cult → Death Cult → Cult. There is a Prefab Sprout song with the same name, and we were also aware of Duran Duran.
>堤田：まずJonny Deeは解散という認識だったので、ならばとサザンデスカルト→デスカルト→カルトのノリでJohnny Johnnyにしました。プリファブにも同名曲ありますが、デュランデュランなんかも意識した安易な考えからでした。
2000年代に山本さんと下田さんはThee Windless Gatesを結成しました。このバンドについて教えて下さい。
Mr. Shimoda : Before Johnnny Dee, I was in a Buzzcock-like 3-piece band with Yamamoto (b) and Masuda (dr). Masuda came back to Kumamoto from Tokyo, so I started the band again. I wanted to do a band sound with a reduced number of notes. Recently, I started recording with making more psychedelic sounds.
> 下田：Johnnny Dee以前に山元君(b)、益田君（dr）とBuzzcockライクな３ピースバンドをやってたんですが、益田君が東京から熊本に戻ってきたこともあり、再びバンドを始めました。
Johnny Deeとは違い音数を減らしたバンドサウンドをやりたくて。最近はサイケデリックな音作りを意識してレコーディングを再開しました。
Anorak Crumble : Thee Windless Gates released the split single with Alvysinger (ex-The Time Capsules) in 2011. Are you good friend with them ?
Thee Windless Gatesは2011年Alvysinger (元The Time Capsules)と共にスプリット・シングルをリリースしましたね。良い友達同士なのですか？
Mr. Shimoda : I have been good friends with them for more than 10 years with the introduction of Mr. Nakamura of Blue-Very. They joined our events in Kumamoto. We exchange informations and are good friends with the whole family. Ono's wife is very cute and her fortune-telling is very good. (but she is not a shaman)
>下田：Blue-very中村氏を通じて交流始めて10年以上の付き合いです。スプリットシングル以外にも熊本でイベントに参加してもらったり、情報交換したり、家族ぐるみで仲良いです。
小野君の奥さんはとても可愛いく、占いがすごく当たる。（シャーマンではないらしい）
Anorak Crumble : The 7's of "Hey Gentle Girl" was released on Blue-Very label in 2019. Is this new recording ?
2019年に7インチ・シングル"Hey Gentle Girl"をBlue-Veryレーベルからリリースしましたね。これはニュー・レコーディングだったのですか？
いつ頃からインディ・ポップを聴き始めましたか？
It is difficult to distinguish between major and indie, but in the context of independent sound : it was the earliest Rough Trade's domestic compilation album "Clear Cut", featuring Josef K, Orange Juice and The Gist. And also Scritti Politti, This Heat and Robert Wyatt..
> メジャーとインディーの区分けが難しいですが、インディペンデントなサウンドというコンテクストで言うと最初期のラフトレイドの国内オムニバス”Clear Cut”でしょうか。Josef KにOrange Juice、Gistも入ってますからね。同じくScritti PolittiやThis Heat、Robert Wyattもまだよくわからないけど惹かれましたね。
Anorak Crumble : What band/artists are you influenced by ? What bands/artists do you listen to at the moment ?

今後の予定を教えて下さい。
Mr. Tsutsumida : I can't tell about a new group with Mr. Shimoda now, but I'm planning a collaboration with Japanese Tracey Thorn ⁉︎ But it is not progressing because of Corona. Hope I can manage to release it. And I found a master of Korova, so I hope to make something near future.
> 堤田：下田君との新たなグループやまだ名前は言えませんが、和製トレーシーソーンさん⁉︎とのコラボ的なものを予定してます。が、コロナ禍もあり進んでない状況ですね。まだフワッとしてますが、何とかリリースまでいけたらと思っています。あとコロバのマスターが見つかったのでなにか形に出来たらと考えています。
