Love, Burns is the brand new project from Phil Sutton (Comet Gain, Velocette, Kicker, The Projects, The Soft City, Pale Lights). His brilliant and fantastic first album, "Fiftieth and Marlborough", published via Calico Cat Records, is already available through his bandcamp https://loveburns.bandcamp.com/releases. Let's talk about it with Phil who kindly accepted to answer some questions. Interview with Toshiko !

ニユー・バンドLove, Burnsについて教えて下さい。バンドPale Lightsとしてでは無く、ソロ・プロジェクトなのですか？
Phil Sutton : Love, Burns is my solo project. I didn’t want to use my real name, because it’s a bit boring. If it was, like, Mick Lennon or David Pop, I would use my name. But Sutton is a pretty wispy sounding word, so... Love, Burns is named for the made up name I used on the first Comet Gain LP, "Casino Classics" : Hoffner Burns. I was trying to think up name for ages, and I kept coming back to this one. Unfortunately, it’s also the name of a Black Rebel Motorcycle song, not a band I’m familiar with. So I put the comma in, as a sort of letter sign off, like, “All the best. Love, Phil.” I might change the name at some point. We’ll see.
Love, Burnsは僕のソロ・プロジェクトです。僕の本名を使いたくなかった、何故ならそれは少し退屈なものだから。もしそうじゃなかったら、Mick LennonやDavid Popみたいな名前を使いたかった。Suttonは一般的な名前では無いから…Comet GainのファーストLP"Casino Classics"にて、Hoffner Burnsの仮名を使っていたので。Love, Burnsは、不運にもBlack Rebel Motorcycle clubの曲タイトルなんだ、バンドの詳しいことは分からないけれども。なので、カンマ( , )を付けたんだ、手紙の終わりに付けるような、"All the best Love, Phil"、みたいな感じに。ある時点で名前を変えたかったので。
Anorak Crumble : Can you tell us about the new album "Fiftieth and Marlborough"... for example : the concept, the lyrics, who did the cover etc ? Why did Gary Olson of The Ladybug Transistor join to make songs ?
ニユー・アルバム"Fiftieth and Marlborough"について教えて下さい。例えば、コンセプトや、歌詞など…誰がレコード・スリーブを作ったのですか？The Ladybug TransistorのGary Olsonが曲作りに参加したのは何故ですか？
Phil Sutton : The LP is digital only, and is made up of eight demos of songs I recorded for a solo record, and for Pale Lights, that we never used. In a collaborative setting, sometimes a song is good, but it doesn’t click with the band, so we don’t record it.
I’m pretty prolific - I’ve already written all the songs for the next Pale Lights LP - so there’s always left over songs. Some of the songs I wrote specially for this (and the next) LP, some were originally for Pale Lights, and one or two were written for
The Soft City, my group with Jason Corace and Dora Lubin. I’m recording the LP proper with Gary Olson, Kyle Forester, and Hampus Öhman-Frölund, with guest appearances from Hewsen Chen (Lake Ruth), Laura Bridge (Harper Lee, Kicker), Ben Philippson (Comet Gain),
Simon Love, and Alicia Hyman from Jeanines. Alicia has done some really lovely violins for one song. But... I liked these demos so much, and because they are different sounding, I wanted to put them out, so that’s what "Fiftieth and Marlborough" is. The demos
were made in part at Gary’s Marlborough Farms studio, and mostly at Kyle’s house, and my house. Remote recording seems to be what we’re all going to have to do for a few months, at least.
アルバムはデジタルだけなんだ。使わなかったPale Lightsとソロの8曲をレコーディングして作った。それらを組み合わせて、時に曲が良かったりするけど、気に入らないと録音しなかったり。僕は作品を沢山残しているよ、次のPale LightsのLPの全曲も既にあります。なので、いつも曲が残っています。今作のLP為の曲の何曲かは、元々はPale Lightsで書いた曲だったり、1～2曲は、Jason CoraceとDora Lubinとの僕のバンドThe Soft Cityの為に書いた曲だったり。Gary

Anorak Crumble : Is Calico Cat Records your own record label ?
Calico Cat Recordsはあなた自身ののレーベルですか？
Phil Sutton : Yes. I hate sending music out to labels, so starting a wee label seemed like a good idea. I released the digital version of The Soft City’s CD (Plastilina), and their 7” EP, and the first two Pale Lights records. Pale Lights has released music
through Kleine Unterground Schallplatten, and now Slumberland, but it’s good to have a band imprint too, to release one offs, or formats another label doesn’t work with. I’m thinking of doing a two-for-one C90 cassette of the first two Pale Lights LP's ! Gary
Olson has a cassette tape collection in his kitchen. He asked for a Pale Lights tape to play, so now it has to happen !

each bands ? (for example : the liner-notes of "Casino Classic" was written by Dan Tracey of TV Personalities... etc)
前のバンドComet Gain, Velocette, Kicker, The Soft Cityについて教えて下さい。Wiiija, Track and Field, Fortuna Pop, Cloudberryとのレコード・レーベル契約はどのようにして行ったのですか？それぞれのバンドの面白いエピソードはありますか？( Comet Gainの)"Casino Classic"アルバムのライナー・ノーツはTV PersonalitiesのDan Traceyが書いたていたりだとか…。
Phil Sutton : Gosh. That’s a lot of information ! Comet Gain, a band I’ve always loved, more so since I left, was my first band, from 1992 to 1997. I was a founding member and played on the first two LP's, and a bunch of singles and what not, mostly on Wiiija.
They are a group dear to my heart, and I still speak to most of the members. The group was really two groups, so a split was inevitable. Four of us left to form Velocette. I named the group, by the way ! But I left after we released a couple of singles (also
Wiiija) and a John Peel session. I started Kicker with Jill Price, Andy Jones, and Laura Bridge (Harper Lee, Hood, Boyracer). This was the first group where I wrote songs. A few other people played with Kicker, including Beatrice Hatherley (Charlotte’s sister)
who went on to write songs for Kylie Minogue, and Jax Coombes, who was in Comet Gain and Velocette, before Ben Phillipson, a friend from high school, joined. We did two LP's, both for Track and Field. Ben is in Comet Gain now, amongst others. I formed The Soft
City in 2008, shortly after I emigrated to the United States (my wife is American). I wrote a lot of songs for The Soft City, but still drummed, with the exception of a 3” CD, released by Cloudberry, where I did sing. After that Dora was the singer. I was
always the drummer. In Kicker I sang a few songs too. Pale Lights was the first group where I sang full time. We started in 2011, when The Soft City split. And yes, Dan Tracey did write the sleeve notes for the first Comet Gain LP "Casino Classics". We knew
Dan, and used to play with the TVP's a lot, around 1993-1995.

Anorak Crumble : How was the indie scene in the 90's ? Brit Pop, Madchester Movement etc ? Did you organize Track And Field's club-night in London ?

Phil Sutton : The 90's. I mostly remember Comet Gain shows with Yummy Fur, Bikini Kill, Prolapse ; the Sausage Machine and underground pop, Mambo Taxi, Cornershop, Voodoo Queens, Broadcast ; Stereolab and Huggy Bear at the White Horse, selling t-shirts for Elastica,
going to Blow Up when it was at the Laurel Tree, working in Camden, the Good Mixer before Britpop (and during and after !), always penniless, never eating, smoking and drinking, staying up late, doing bad Northern Soul dancing, getting locked out of my house
with the band Further, Rough Trade shows, thrift shopping for corduroys, and being young and stupid. Brit Pop was the least of it !

Anorak Crumble : What bands/artists did you play gigs with ?
どのようなバンドと一緒にプレイしましたか？
Phil Sutton : Lots. The biggest was Pavement. Or Cornershop. They had a Number 1 record ! And Stereolab. And The Pastels. But we played with most of the people I mentioned already. I didn’t have anything to do with the running of Track and Field, but Kicker
were on the label from 1999 to 2005. The first release was our single "Said and Done", written by Andy Jones. Jill Price, our singer, was Steve Drew’s sister. I - all of Kicker - went to the club most weeks, and I even DJ’d one time. It was a brilliant little
scene while it lasted. We got to play shows with The Clientele, Birdie, Ladybug Transistor, Essex Green, Beechwood Sparks, The Tyde, Ashley Park, The Projects, Tompaulin, Trashcan Sinatras, The Loves, Comet Gain... lots of great bands. A really fun time. I also
drummed for The Projects, who were on Track and Field before I joined. We did a crazy tour of Scandinavia and Germany.
