Indonesia is since many years now one of the spearhead of international indie pop. And Shiny Happy Records, led by Eko Sutrisno, is surely one of the best label from this country. Let's talk about Indonesian pop scene and international pop with Eko Sutrisno, founder of Shiny Happy Records, who kindly accepted to answer some questions !

インドネシアDepokでの生活はどんな感じですか？良いレーベルやクラブはありますか？
Eko Sutrisno : Now I live in Bumi Serpong Damai, Tangerang. However, Depok is the place where I was born and spent my teenage life. I really enjoyed spending my time with my family and friends there. In Depok, even though I’m a fan of indiepop but in reality I used to get
involve in the hardcore scene. So many good hardcore/punk bands in Depok but it’s very strange that I only found three indie pop bands there. They are The Wellington, Humsikk and The Sweetest Touch and of course my own band The Lousy Pop Group. For record labels,
most of them are punk and hardcore record labels. Maybe Shiny Happy Records is the only one indie pop label there !

Anorak Crumble : When did you start to listen to indie pop music ?
いつ頃からインディ・ポップを聴き始めましたか？
Eko Sutrisno : I started to listen to indiepop during high school. I’m a fan of indiepop bands ; I collected the records but I couldn’t find any friends who has the same taste of music as mine. At that time, I played in a hardcore band with my high school friends.
僕は高校生の時にインディ・ポップを聴き始めました。インディ・ポップ・バンドのファンで、レコードを買っていたけど同じ音楽嗜好の友達は居なかった。高校の時、僕は友達とハード・コア・バンドでプレイしていた。
Anorak Cumble : Please tell us about the story of birth of Shiny Happy Records. Why did you decided to start a label ?
Shiny Happy Recordsの誕生ストーリーを教えて下さい。何故レーベルをスタートすると決めたのですか？
Eko Sutrisno : As I told you before that I didn’t find any friends who have the same taste of music as mine so I decided to start my solo project called Chasing Monday. I was able to record one song then I uploaded in myspace. Surprisingly, Chris from Series Two Records (Columbus, Nebraska) messaged me and asked me to join Series Two Records' compilation. I started to follow how Christ managed his Series Two Records. Often time I messaged him and asked about how to run record label. In 2009, I started this Shiny Happy Records. At that
time in Indonesia, people were not really excited to buy records they prefer to find mp3s. When I first started this label I didn’t have much buyer from Indonesia. Mostly people from USA, Japan and Spain were the ones who bought my releases. This is also one
of the reasons why did I start the label. It’s because I wanted the physical releases “alive” again. Aside from that, I also believe that if I like the bands why don’t I contribute something for them by releasing their album.
さっき言ったように、僕と同じ音楽嗜好を持った友達が居なかったので、Chasing Monday という僕のソロ・プロジェクトを始めることに決めました。一曲レコードディングしてマイ・スペースにアップしました。驚くことに、Series Two RecordsのChrisが僕にメッセージをくれて、コンピレーションに参加しないかと訊いて来ました。彼に頻繁にメールしていて、レーベル運営の仕方を訊きました。2009年にShiny Happy Recordsを始めました。当時インドネシアではレコードを買うことには飽きていてmp3が好まれていました。なのでレーベルの商品を買ってくれる人がインドネシアには居なくて、アメリカや日本やスペインの人達が僕のリリースを買ってくれました…再びフィジカルなリリースを望んでいたし、もしバンドを気に入ったら、アルバムをリリースしたりして彼等を助けたいから。

Eko Sutrisno : The Silent Love is formed by Ganesha ; he is a pop genius. He has several great bands including Funny Little Dreams, Cotton Cloud and Casual Conversation . Toy Tambourine is the project of Mirza. This guy is very talented. He has so many musical
projects and Toy Tambourine is for the fans of Sarah Records. Tamanakota and Clubwtaer are related to each other. They started as Tamankota but then some of their group members left the band and they decided to change the name into Clubwater. The Sweetest
Touch is a very sweet band. They are one among three indiepop bands from Depok. I found them in Soundcloud and I think they are great band and I have to support them. The Lousy Pop Group is my band. I started this band alone. I write and play all the instruments
all by myself during the recordings. I’m so happy that I found good friends to join this band.
The Silent LoveはGeneshaによって結成されました、彼はポップの天才です。Funny Little Dream, Cotton Cloud, Casual Conversationといったバンドもやっています。Toy TambourineはMirzaのプロジェクト。彼も才能があって、彼の様々なプロジェクトとToy TambourineはSarah Recordsのファンの為のもの。TamanakotaとClubwaterは関係があります、彼等はTamanakotaをスタートしてからメンバーの何人かはバンドを去りClubwaterと名前を変えました。The Sweetest Touchはとてもスイートなバンド。Depok出身で、Soundcloudで彼等を見つけました。グレイトなバンドでサポートしたいと思いました。The Lousy Pop Groupは僕のバンド。一人で始めました。レコーディングでは曲を書いて全ての楽器をプレイしました。このバンドに参加してくれる友達が居て幸せです。
Anorak Crumble :Who makes the covers of the record sleeves ?
誰がレコード・スリーブを手掛けているのですか？
Eko Sutrisno : The artwork's done by my friends. I print them. Sometimes, I also go to printing shop. But I do cut and glue myself.
僕の友達がアートワークをやっています。僕がプリントして、時に印刷屋さんへ行って。だけど僕は切ったり貼ったり自分でやります。
Anorak Crumble : What are your favourite bands of all time ?

Eko Sutrisno : A lot... Amongst of them of course Brighter, The Field Mice, McCarthy and many more !

Anorak Crumble : What do you think about indie pop all around the world at the moment ?
現在の世界中のインディ・ポップについて、どう思いますか？
Eko Sutrisno : I think it’s great ! There are many new great bands. In some countries when few years ago we rarely seen indiepop bands now we can see more bands. There are also many new good record labels and well done to those old records labels that still exist and support
the bands.
グレイトだと思うよ！新しいグレイトなニュー・バンドが居ます。いくつかの国々には何年か前はインディ・ポップ・バンドがあまり居なかったけれど、今はより多くのバンドがいて。新しいレコード・レーベルもあるし、古いレーベルもまだ存在していて、バンドをサポートしています。
Anorak Crumble : What are your favourite labels ?
あなたのお気に入りのレーベルは？
Eko Sutrisno : I like Series Two, Cloudberry and some indonesian record labels such as HeyHo ! (RIP), Bah ! (RIP), Dismantled, Yellow Room, Don’t Fade Away. Those labels have shown great efforts to support the bands.

Anorak Crumble : Can you tell us about your future releases ?
今後のリリースの予定を教えて下さい。
Eko Sutrisno : I have some plans this year but this Covid 19 forces me to stay at home. However I still have some pending releases including Apple Orchard Cdr, split tape : Mirrorlakes/Suncharms, new Clubwater EP and The Lousy Pop Group EP. I hope I can release
them this year.
