Initially a group project led by Edward Ball with members John East, Simon Smith (The Merton Parkas and The Small Town Parade), Bob Kelly, Ray Kent, Daniel Treacy, Paul Damian and Muff Wile. Ball and Treacy (Television Personalities) founded their own label Whaam! Records and The Times released the album "Pop Goes Art!", individually hand-painted sleeves in 1982. English techno-rock band formed in Manchester in 1980 by Bernard Sumner (vocals / guitar), Peter Hook (bass) and Stephen Morris (drums). The band formed after the demise of Joy Division, following the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. Gillian Gilbert joined the band as a keyboardist later that year. They were the flagship band for Manchester-based independent record label Factory Records and the night-club The Hacienda. They also collaborated with graphic designer Peter Saville. They released ten albums including "Power, Corruption & Lies (1983)", "Low Life (1985)", "Brotherhood (1986)" and "Waiting for The Siren's Call (2005)". Their fifth album "Technique (1990)" was recorded in Ibiza-island and their sixth album "Republic (1992)" was the last studio album for eight years until 2001's "Get Ready". Their song "Shellshock" was featured on the soundtrack album of "Pretty In Pink (1986)". The song "Blue Monday 1988" was remixed by Quincy Jones and the song "Confusion" was collaborated with Arthur Baker, both American producer & musician. In 1990 they recorded the official song of the England national football team's World Cup song "World in Motion", under the band name EnglandNewOrder. The soundtrack of "24 Hour Party People" featured their track "Here to Stay", produced by The Chemical Brothers. In 2015 the band released the album "Music Complete " without Hook. The band members also had side projects including Electronic (Sumner with Johnny Marr from The Smiths), Revenge & Monaco (Hook) and The Other Two (Morris and Gilbert). Happy Mondays disbanded in 1993, Ryder and Bez formed Black Grape with ex-Paris Angels guitarist Wags.

British singer-songwriter. She is best known as being one half of the duo Everything But The Girl from 1982 to 1999. She was also a member of the band Marine Girls between 1980 to 1983. Since 2007 she has been active as a solo artist. Thorn's first solo work was the mini-album "A Distant Shore (Cherry Red Records / 1982)." Her song "Plain Sailing" was released as a single and was included on the "Pillows & Prayers" compilation album on Cherry Red records in 1982. Massive Attack collaborated with her and released "Protection" in 1994 as their second single. It reached number 14 on the UK singles chart.

Northern Portrait formed in 2007 in Copenhagen Denmark. The band is Stefan Larsen (vocals, guitar), Michael Sørensen (drums), Jesper Bonde (guitar) and Caspar Bock Sørensen (bass). They just released the new single "At Attention" from the forthcoming new album "The Swiss Army" on Matinee Recordings, for the first time in 7 years! Their music is still sophisticated and so elegant ! Let's talk about it with Stefan !
Anorak Crumble :. When / why did you form the band ? Why did you name the band "Northern Portrait" ?

Stefan Larsen : I believe Northern Portrait was formed sometime in the Summer of 2007. The reason is not entirely clear for me but I think it was because there were a few songs that somehow needed to be recorded and didn’t fit the bill of the duo Michael (NP drummer) and I (Stefan, NP singer) had at the time. Our duo was called The Mirror Lounge and had darker more filmic edge to the songs. But whilst digging through my dictaphone for ideas to develop I stumbled across the song that eventually became the first Northern Portrait recording - a song with the exhausted title ‘Crazy’. Everything went pretty quickly after that one was recorded. Soon a couple of more songs followed; ‘I Give You Two Seconds to Entertain Me’ and ‘What Happens Next’ and I think it wasn’t much more that two week before we started receiving offers from some record labels. We decided to go with the glorious Matinée Recordings. The reason for our band name is also a little bit blurry to me but I think it was because some of the early lyrics had a sort of outrageous and sometimes cynical element that was/is totally different from the happy nation image of Denmark that we wanted to give a slight twist.

Anorak Crumble :. I thought your sounds like The Smiths when I listened to your debut EP "The Fallen Aristocracy (2008)". Are you influenced by The Smiths ? What are your favourite bands / artists ?
Stefan Larsen : Thank you. Well, we are undeniably influenced by The Smiths but a number of other groups and singers as well; The Housemartins, Echo and the Bunnymen, Stone Roses, The Beatles, The Kinks, Pulp, Trashcan Sinatras and The Jam just to mention a few obvious ones. My personal favourites include lots of others as well - Chris Isaak, Elvis (both Presley and Costello), Smokey Robinson, Suede, some Danish acts that you probably wouldn’t know, The Holiday Crowd, The Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis. The list goes on and on.

Anorak Crumble :. Please tell us about the album "Criminal Art Lovers (Matinee Recordings / 2009)" if you have album-concepts, kind of unique episodes etc. ?

Stefan Larsen : Well, it isn’t really a themed album as such but of course there is some sort of general idea - at least in my mind. But it wasn’t written with a masterplan for the music or lyrics. I guess it just reflects some ideas I had at the time when you look at the lyrics (which I write) and then presented a variety of musical ideas that were in circulation within the band. It was recorded in a very primitive fashion and even though it sounds far from technically perfect I still rather like it and think it has aged quite well.
Anorak Crumble :. Why did you sign to Matinee Recordings ?

Stefan Larsen : After only a few weeks in existence we started receiving interest and even offers from some record labels based on the two or three tracks we had issued on myspace at the time. But when Matinée Recordings came forward it wasn’t a very difficult decision to go that way. They have an astonishing catalogue and some very inspiring artists. And have released some of my favourite records. The Siddeleys for instance is such a perfect group. Just to mention one of many. We are honoured to be on that label.
Stefan Larsen : Good question. There are a number of reasons why its been quite a while since we last released something; first of all we are all involved in a number of different projects and activities - from architecture, to movies and advertising, other music and much more. And then the forthcoming album has been finished for a while - but due to the current state of the world and very limited access to get out and play live we decided to postpone the release slightly. But now we couldn’t wait any longer. We are really looking forward to getting it out there and all I can say is that we have more releases lined up as well.
Anorak Crumble : Please tell us about your forth-coming album "The Swiss Army" ?

Stefan Larsen : As mentioned it has been finished for some time so I have had a chance to listen to it a few times now - and I must say that I am very pleased with it indeed. And I cannot wait for people to hear it as well. I think we have made a perfect record within our current abilities and hope we can get out there and present it live soon too.

Stefan Larsen : Life in DK is quite good even with the current virus going on. I have a young daughter who takes much of my time so the fact that clubs, concerts, football matches, etc. have been brought to a minimum since March hasn't bothered me too much. But of course I have an urge to get out and about now. Especially with our new album. And then I’m looking forward to some rescheduled concerts coming up. It seems the last couple of years have brought some excellent new record shops to Copenhagen. Venues are fine too but with Northern Portrait we have mainly played abroad.
Anorak Crumble : Please tell us your future plans ?

Stefan Larsen : Michael, Jesper, Caspar and I are on the starting blocks ready for action as soon as someone asks us to come and play. Also, I have a little side-project that I fiddle with at the moment and hope to present soon. But as for Northern Portrait we are simply thrilled about the good reception of our new single and cannot wait to share the album with everyone.

The Crowded House re-formed in 2006 and released the album "Time on Earth (Parlophone / 2007)" which became number one in Australian chart.

Later in 1985 the band was asked to write a song for the John Hughes film Pretty In Pink so they wrote "If You Leave".

Founding member Vince Clarke left after the release of the album "A Broken Frame" on Mute Records in 1982 then Alan Wilder replaced Clarke. He worked with Anna Karina in 1999 and Helena (sister of Lio) in 2001. Then he moved to major labels such as Barclay and released many albums until 2019.

When did you listen to indie pop for the first time ?
■最初にインディ・ポップを聴いたのはいつでしたか？
Roque Ruiz : I listened to indie pop music for the first time when I was 18. I grew up in Peru and listened to a lot of Spanish pops. It's normal they were played on the mainstream radio. Alaska Y Dinarama was one of my favourite Spanish band. Carlos Berlanga, one of the band-member still continued to make music and he released the album on Elefant Records. So I visited the website...there are so many good stuff I've never heard of ! There has never been a clue to Spanish indie pop so I was into them and then post C86 bands, finally. I fell in love with them and obsessed with them too.

Please tell us about the birth of Cloudberry Records.
■Cloudberry Recordsの誕生ストーリーを教えて下さい。
Roque Ruiz : I started Cloudberry Records in January 2007 after making C-06 tape that was a wonderful experience. I made tapes very limited. It was featured new bands which have C-86 spirit. It was a small success. 75 copies were sold out in 8 days. I wished I could release this tape on CD. This gave me the energy to create another label. I was busy for running Plastilina Records but wanted to do something different. Most of Plastilina releases were the albums. So I think something new, even if there is a risk, only singles, do it yourself, very DIY, with a beautiful design? So firstly I released Ceelestial and Princess Nikko. It was well received. I love the band Cloudberry Jam so I named my label Cloudberry. I wanted to have sweet and dreamy naming. It gave a perfect impression for my label ! My label started like this. I didn't feel like "I'm going to label". There were a lot of great bands I wanted to release because no one was willing to put it out. I have to do it ! At first I thought about the overall operation and planned a small detail, but it became more like a project than a label. I wanted to work towards the goal little by little. Firstly I really enjoyed it. I thought about what to do with the CD sleeve, how to cut it, and how to print it. I bought a lot of glue, scissors, a cutter, etc. It was a wonderful time, Inspired by indie pop from bands, labels and fans. Also from DIY logic, at first as a fan. Really happy when I write a letter to my favorite band. Write as a fan. I got an autograph sometimes. It's very nerdy but indie pop gives me love back.
What do you think about indie pop all around the world ?
■世界のインディポップ・シーンを、どう思いますか？
Roque Ruiz : I think it's Wonderful. People of different races around the world are just having fun, as the photos of the Indie Tracks Festival tell us. That scene makes me happy. I feel like people who want to go out with me for the rest of my life. Don't you think they are wise and sensual people? They have sense off course. Music represents people, indie pop has good value, I can't think of anything wrong with it. Shining and colorful music, is there anyone who gets worse listening to this? If this was metal music ... it would have been another story ! We will be always angry (lol) ?
Have you ever traveled the world ? Are there your favourite cities ?
■世界を旅したことは？お気に入りの街は？
Roque Ruiz : In US : Miami, Orlando, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston etc. I have been to Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Columbia (South America), Ecuador, Brazil and Peru too. In Europe I have only been to Germany. It's difficult to choose my favourite from these. It's going to be a country where my pop friends live. If I have to move, definitely Europe...Berlin or Hamburg because I know only about Germany. My trip to Hamburg was the best time I've ever had so maybe I should choose here (lol).

Anorak Crumble : Now you live in New York, not Miami ?
今あなたはマイアミでは無くニューヨークに住んでいるのですか？
Roque Ruiz : Hi Toshiko! Yes, I moved to New York at the end of 2011. The move had nothing to do with the label, it was me getting a new job in this city. It was quite complicated to move all my records, not just my collection but also all the Cloudberry stock of records!
Roque Ruiz : Yeah, that was the idea. And I completed the 100 CDRs I think in about two years. It was a great time for indiepop then (2007-2009). There were lots of bands and Myspace was a great tool to find these bands. Also the CDR format was much more liked then than now. It was easy and cheap, one could make their own in true DIY fashion. So many bands released in that format, and labels followed. The 3" format was a cool idea at the time, it made a difference to the big 5" CDR, especially as the idea was to release singles, with about 3 songs on each CDR. So it was trying to imitate what a 7" was compared to a 12" too.
Anorak Crumble : Please tell us about the future releases on Cloudberry Records ?

Roque Ruiz : This year has been a bit quiet with everything that has happened. We released a fanzine with a 5 song compilation and the Macguffins compilation. We would have released a 7" now at the end of the year but I will be out of town for the reminder of the year so this release will come out in January. It is by the Finnish band Verandan whose lead member was once part of Cats on Fire. It will have two songs and lovely artwork by a Spanish illustrator called Oct Streitenberger. Also as we speak I am working on a retrospective compilation for an 80s Swedish band. But that's all I can say for now!
今年は少し静かなものとなった。5曲入りのコンピレーション付きのファンジンとThe Macguffinsのコンピレーションをリリースした。今年の終わりに7インチをリリースしたいんだけど、街を離れているだろうから。今年の思い出の為に…リリースは来年の1月になるだろう、Cats on FireのメンバーによるVerandanだていうフィンランドのバンドだよ。2曲入りでスペインのイラストレーターOct Streitenbergerによるラブリーなアート・ワークだよ。そしてまた僕は80年代のスゥエーデンのバンドの回顧盤を作る話もしている。だけどこれが僕が言える全てだよ！

Roque Ruiz : The blog started in 2008 and it's been updated around 3 times a week since. I post interviews with indiepop bands and also I write posts featuring long lost bands. The idea being that there are very little indiepop blogs now and as no one is really trying to document indiepop (aside from some very good efforts in the way of books by Michael White or Neil Taylor) I am trying to do my part. For me it is a bit harder as I wasn't part of the 80s scene nor was in the UK then. But I try to dig, do some detective work, and if possible give a voice to these bands when I find them. The blog has given me a lot of great friends as well, so I hope to continue for many years.
