Australian indie pop band Even As We Speak, which belonged to Sarah Records during the 90's, just released the new album "Adelphi". Let's talk about it with Mary Wyer !
オーストラリアのインディ・ポップ・バンドで、90年代にSarah Recordsに所属していたEven As We Speakが、ニュー・アルバム"Adelphi"をリリースしたばかり。Mary Wyerさんに語って頂きました！
Anorak Crumble : Can you please tell us about Even As We Speak history for those who may not already know about your band ? When and where the band was formed ?
まだ知られていないEven As We Speakのヒストリーを教えて下さい。いつ、何処で、バンドは結成されたのですか？
Mary Wyer : Even As We Speak was formed in Sydney in 1985. Matt is the only original member, but I joined pretty early in 1986. The story behind that was that I attended a band dinner at a restaurant in Glebe (it was a potato Rosti restaurant) and I was singing to myself while looking at the menu, and Matt said “Hey, we are doing some recording next week, want to do some backing vocals ?” and that is how I got to sing on “Small Fish In a Big Machine”. I became a permanent fixture then. We played lots of house parties and then Sydney venues because there WERE lots of venues back in those days. It was loads of fun. We also recorded “I won’t Have To Think About You” and “Blue Suburban Skies” by 1987. The whole band was supposed to go to live in the UK in 1988 - but in the end only Matt and Mary went. We didn’t do any live gigs - but we did record “Goes So Slow” and “Nothing ever Happens” while we were there. We lived in Bristol - but we didn’t know about Sarah Records !!! We got home to Sydney late 1988. “Goes So Slow/Nothing ever Happens” was released on Sydney label Phantom Records. Rob joined us to play bass - I had known Rob since 1983 - he lived in my first share house. Then we had a few different drummers before Anita came - and luckily stayed. We recorded “Outgrown this Town” together and it was also released on Phantom. Julian came on board in the early 90's (he had been in other bands on Phantom records) when he did some recording, arranging and producing with us. We loved what he did so much that it seemed natural for him to join EAWS.
Even As We Speak (以下EAWS) はシドニーにて1985年に結成。Mattは唯一のオリジナル・メンバーでしたが、私は1986の始めに加入しました。話の背景には、Glebe (potato Rostiレストランでした)でのバンドとのディナーに出席して、私は契約する予定だった、内容を見てMatt が言ったの。 “来週レコーディングをやろう、バック・ボーカルをやりたくないかい？” それで"Small Fish In a Big Machine"で歌ったの。私はパーマネント・メンバーになったわ。沢山のハウス・パーティーやシドニーのライブ・ハウスで演奏したわ、何故なら当時は沢山のベニューがあったから。私達は “I won’t Have To Think About You” と“Blue Suburban Skies” を1987年までにレコーディングしました。1988年にはバンドでライブをやりにUKへ行ってサポートされたわ。最後にはMattとMaryだけだったけど。ライブ・ギグはやらなかったけど"Goes So Slow"と"Nothing ever Happens"の録音を居る間にやったわ。ブリストルに住んだの、サラ・レコードのことは知らなかったわ !!! 1988年の終わりにシドニーへ戻り"Goes So Slow/Nothing Ever Happens" はシドニーのレーベルPhantom Recordsからリリースされました。Robがベースで加入して、家をシェアしました。Robのことは1983年から知っていて、初めて家をシェアしたわ。Snitaが来る前は、何人かドラマーが交代したわ。 Outgrownという街で一緒にレコーディングしてPhantomからリリースしたわ。90年代初めにJulianが来て (彼Phantom recordsの別のバンドに居たわ)。 彼がレコーディングをやっていた時に、アレンジやプロデュースを私達と一緒にやってくれたの。EAWSに自然な形で参加してくれたので、私達は彼がやってくれたことが気に入ったわ。
Anorak Crumble : How did you contract with Sarah Records in the 90's ?
どのように90年代にSarah Recordsと契約したのですか？
Mary Wyer : In late 1989 or early 1990 we got a message from an Australian in Brighton who told us John Peel was playing “Goes So Slow”. They said they could put us in touch with Sarah Records. In Australia - with no internet and limited access to UK radio and press we knew very little about the UK scene. But we were mighty excited. Everything was done by snail mail. Clare and Matt suggested we re-release the songs on the “Blue Suburban Skies” and “Goes So Slow” singles combined and so we did ! We did a couple of month long tours to the UK- and then went to live there in 1993. “Feral Pop Frenzy” was released at that time.

Anorak Crumble : Why and when did you decided to reunite ?
何故、再結成しようと決めたのですか？
Mary Wyer : You know - there is some confusion amongst the band about that. We all have different memories about it. BUT, I just went through old emails and pieced it together. In 2011, I was living in the Middle East. Matt contacted us about the possibility of doing another album and sent out songs for us to listen to. Lots of emails went back and forth - Matt sent demos of new songs. And when I got back we got together to rehearse them. Some of those songs ended up on the “Black Forest” EP years later. Matt and Julian were up in Brisbane and the rest of us in Sydney - so it wasn’t easy to get together and took a long time. Somewhere in there, we were contacted by Lucy who was making the My Secret World documentary and Michael White re his book Popkiss, so we knew that there was renewed interest in the label. We did a gig in Sydney for Matt’s and my birthday - and it was so much fun we thought why not keep going. Stew Anderson also contacted and said he would like to release some material on Emotional Response, and so he released the “Black Forest” and the Peel Sessions.
バンドの中で混乱があったの。皆それについて違った思い出があって。 2011年にミドル・イーストに住んでいたの。Mattが別のアルバムを作る可能性があるか訊いて来たので、曲を聴いてもらうために送られてきたの。 沢山のメールが行き交ったわ。Mattが新曲のデモを送ってくれたの。私が戻った時に私達は一緒にリハーサルしたわ。 それらのうちの何曲かは後に"The Black Forest EP" となり、Mattと Julianはブリスベンへ～残りのメンバーは シドニーへ。なので一緒に長い間居ることは容易では無かったわ。My Secret WorldのドキュメンタリーとMichael Whiteの本Popkissを手掛けたLucyからコンタクトがあったわ。私達は再結成することに興味があって、Mattの誕生日にシドニーでコンサートをやったの。とても楽しかったけど続かなかった。Stew Andersonもまたコンタクトを取ってきて、 Emotional Responseレーベルから何か出したいって。それで彼は"The Black Forest"と"The Peel Sessions"をリリースしてくれたの。
Anorak Crumble : Can you please tell us about your new album "Adelphi" ? When was it recorded ? Why and how did you decided to contract with Shelflife Records and Discos de Kirlian ?
ニユー・アルバム"Adelphi"について教えて下さい。いつレコーディングしたのですか？何故、Shelflife RecordsやDiscos de Kirlianレーベルと契約しようと決めたのですか？
Mary Wyer : “Adelphi” is an album about what it is like to be us now. Matt is quite a prolific songwriter and he can write great pop. This album, however, tackles themes of middle age - the gains and the losses, dreams and regrets. It’s a topic not often explored in music - but we think we have managed to present it in all its beauty and sadness. It was recorded during 2018 and 2019. Matt had to fly down to Sydney a lot for the recording sessions. Then Julian, who is an amazing musician, producer and arranger, spent a lot of time with the material shaping it into the album it is.
Emotional Response was unable to release “Adelphi” in 2019 - but for a number of reasons out of everyone’s control that fell through. I went to Ed at Shelflife because I love the label and also because I have been friends with him for a long time, so I know and trust him to make sure “Adelphi” gets the promotion it deserves. Most indie labels are partnering across the USA/ Europe divide to try and reduce postage costs. So Ed asked Discos de Kirlian and they agreed. We hope to meet them in Spain.
Mattは多才なソングライターで、彼はグレイト・ポップを書くことが出来るわ。このアルバムは、ミドル・エイジのテーマに取り組むこと… 利益と損失、夢と後悔。 音楽ではあまり表れないトピックよ。美しさやサッドネスを、何とか表現しようと思って。 2018年と2019年に録音されたものよ。 Mattはレコーディングのセッションのために何度もシドニーへ飛んで、 素晴らしいミュージシャンのJulienはプロデューサーでありアレンジャーであり、アルバムの為に多くの時間を過ごしたわ。Emotional Responseレーベルは"Adelphi"を2019年にリリースしなかったの。ShelflifeのEdのところへ行って…何故ならこのレーベルが大好きだし彼と長い間友達だったから、"Adelphi"をプロモーションしてくれると彼を信頼していたわ。大多数のインディ・レーベルが、USA/ Europeへの郵送代を減らそうとしていたので、EdがDiscos de Kirlianへ訊いて、賛成してくれたの。彼らとスペインで会いたいわ。
Anorak Crumble : Can you tell us about the lyrics on this new album ?
ニユー・アルバムの歌詞について教えて下さい。
Mary Wyer : I think I answered this above a bit. Someone was chosen to open the album because it sets the tone for the album concept - middle age. There are songs about happy memories, broken relationships, children and death. Matt doesn't always tell us what songs mean 🙂. For me the song “Unknown” is a standout, musically and lyrically. It is the song about death and my favourite lines are :
“When excavators dig my bones will we connect across time zones ?
When all that’s left is teeth and mud, will there be remnants of love ?”
ハッピーな思い出について、リレーションシップの破綻について、子供達や死についてなどの曲よ。Mattはいつも曲について教えてくれないの🙂私にとっては、"Unknown"は音楽的にも歌詞の面でも突き出ているものだと思う。死についての私のお気に入りの歌詞は、 “When excavators dig my bones will we connect across time zones? When all that’s left is teeth and mud, will there be remnants of love?”
Anorak Crumble : What are your favorite bands/artists of all time ?
あなたのお気に入りのバンド / アーティストは？
Mary Wyer : That question is too hard really. But Kate Bush was my first love and she still is. The Triffids are my favourite Australian band of all time

Anorak Crumble : What band/artists did you listen at the moment ?

Mary Wyer : This morning I listened to the the album “I heard You Dreaming” by Night Heron - just beautiful. Out on Subjangle. I’ve also been listening to label-mates - so like Jetstream Pony, Nah, Airiel, Close Lobsters, etc. I really love the Killing Eve soundtrack and there is a new song out by The (Dixie) Chicks - of all bands - that I really, really like - called “March March”. Otherwise I rely on my son coming around with his playlists - he is much more knowledgeable about music than I am. I also have to learn all the new songs Matt sends through - so I spend a lot of time listening to EAWS 😂.
今朝はNight Heronのアルバム“I heard You Dreaming”を聴いたわ。本当に美しいわ。レーベル・メイト…Jetstream Pony, Nah, Airiel, Close Lobsters等も聴いているわ。サウンドトラックの"The Killing Eve"にはThe (Dixie) Chicksの新曲や全てのバンドも…ホントに “March March”が好きなの。私の息子のプレイリストにお任せしているの…彼は私よりも音楽の知識があるから。Mattが送ってきた新曲もやらなきゃ…だからいつも私はEAWSを聴いているわよ😂.
Anorak Crumble : Any plans for the future for Even As We Speak after the release of "Adelphi" ?
"Adelphi" のリリースの後のプランはありますか？
Mary Wyer : We were so sad to cancel our tour to do Cologne Popfest and the UK - so when COVID-19 restrictions finally lift we would like to get back out there and do some shows. USA, Asia would be great too. Meanwhile we might do some live streams playing “Adelphi” once it is released.
COVID-19の制限でCologneポップフェストとUKのツアーをキャンセルすることになって悲しいわ。アメリカやアジアもグレイトでしょうね。 "Adelphi"がリリースされたらライブをやるかもしれないわ。
