Anorak Crumble: Stefan Larsen, Northern Portrait Interview

Northern Portrait formed in 2007 in Copenhagen Denmark. The band is Stefan Larsen (vocals, guitar), Michael Sørensen (drums), Jesper Bonde (guitar) and Caspar Bock Sørensen (bass). They just released the new single "At Attention" from the forthcoming new album "The Swiss Army" on Matinee Recordings, for the first time in 7 years! Their music is still sophisticated and so elegant ! Let's talk about it with Stefan !

Northern Portraitはデンマークのコペンハーゲンで2007年に結成されました。バンドはStefan Larsen (ボーカル, ギター), Michael Sørensen (ドラム), Jesper Bonde (ギター), Caspar Bock Sørensen (ベース)で、彼らはMatinee Recordingsから間もなく発売のアルバム"The Swiss Army"からのシングル"At Attention"を7年ぶりにリリースしたばかり。洗練されていてエレガントなサウンド未だ健在！シンガーのStefanに語って頂きました！

Anorak Crumble :. When / why did you form the band ? Why did you name the band "Northern Portrait" ?

何故バンドを結成したのですか？何故"Northern Portrait"と名付けたのですか？

Stefan Larsen : I believe Northern Portrait was formed sometime in the Summer of 2007. The reason is not entirely clear for me but I think it was because there were a few songs that somehow needed to be recorded and didn’t fit the bill of the duo Michael (NP drummer) and I (Stefan, NP singer) had at the time. Our duo was called The Mirror Lounge and had darker more filmic edge to the songs. But whilst digging through my dictaphone for ideas to develop I stumbled across the song that eventually became the first Northern Portrait recording - a song with the exhausted title ‘Crazy’. Everything went pretty quickly after that one was recorded. Soon a couple of more songs followed; ‘I Give You Two Seconds to Entertain Me’ and ‘What Happens Next’ and I think it wasn’t much more that two week before we started receiving offers from some record labels. We decided to go with the glorious Matinée Recordings. The reason for our band name is also a little bit blurry to me but I think it was because some of the early lyrics had a sort of outrageous and sometimes cynical element that was/is totally different from the happy nation image of Denmark that we wanted to give a slight twist.

Northern Portraitは2007年の夏にデンマークのコペンハーゲンで結成した。理由は完全に明らかでは無いけれど、レコーディングする必要のある何曲かがあってMichael (ドラマー)と僕(Stefan, シンガー)では適合しなかった。僕達デュオはThe Mirror Loungeとして、より暗くて映画のようなエッジの曲をやっていた。発展するようにアイデアを求めて掘り下げている間、最終的に初めてのNorthern Portraitのレコーディングで、ひょっこり"Crazy"が出来た。一つ出来たら全て早く作れるようになり、何曲か直ぐに続いた : "I Give You Two Seconds to Entertain Me"や "What Happens Next"あたりが。いくつかのレコード・レーベルからオファーを得るのに2週間もかからなかった。素晴らしいMatinée Recordingsへ行くことに決めた。バンド名の由来は少し曖昧なんだけど、初期の歌詞が、ある意味とんでもなくて、デンマークの幸せな国のイメージとは異なる皮肉な要素を持っていて。少し捻りを加えたかった。

Anorak Crumble :. I thought your sounds like The Smiths when I listened to your debut EP "The Fallen Aristocracy (2008)". Are you influenced by The Smiths ? What are your favourite bands / artists ?

あなたのデビューEP"The Fallen Aristocracy (2008)".を聴いた時、サウンドがThe Smithsみたいだと思いました。The Smithsから影響を受けていますか？あなたのお気に入りのバンド / アーティストは何ですか？

Stefan Larsen : Thank you. Well, we are undeniably influenced by The Smiths but a number of other groups and singers as well; The Housemartins, Echo and the Bunnymen, Stone Roses, The Beatles, The Kinks, Pulp, Trashcan Sinatras and The Jam just to mention a few obvious ones. My personal favourites include lots of others as well - Chris Isaak, Elvis (both Presley and Costello), Smokey Robinson, Suede, some Danish acts that you probably wouldn’t know, The Holiday Crowd, The Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis. The list goes on and on.

Anorak Crumble :. Please tell us about the album "Criminal Art Lovers (Matinee Recordings / 2009)" if you have album-concepts, kind of unique episodes etc. ?

アルバム"Criminal Art Lovers (Matinee Recordings / 2009)"" について、コンセプトや面白いエピソードなどあったら教えて下さい。

Stefan Larsen : Well, it isn’t really a themed album as such but of course there is some sort of general idea - at least in my mind. But it wasn’t written with a masterplan for the music or lyrics. I guess it just reflects some ideas I had at the time when you look at the lyrics (which I write) and then presented a variety of musical ideas that were in circulation within the band. It was recorded in a very primitive fashion and even though it sounds far from technically perfect I still rather like it and think it has aged quite well.

えーと、これはテーマのあるアルバムでは本当に無くて。だけど勿論、一般的なアイディアみたいなものはあって...少なくとも自分の中で。だけど音楽や歌詞のマスタープランがあって書いたものでは無かった。当時、僕が抱いていたいくつかのアイディアを反映したもの。(僕が書いた)歌詞を見て様々な音楽的アイデアをバンド内で発表して。非常に原始的な方法で録音され、技術的に完璧とはほど遠いけれど、それでも僕はそれが好きで。かなり熟成されたものだよ。

Anorak Crumble :. Why did you sign to Matinee Recordings ?

何故Matinee Recordingsと契約したのですか？

Stefan Larsen : After only a few weeks in existence we started receiving interest and even offers from some record labels based on the two or three tracks we had issued on myspace at the time. But when Matinée Recordings came forward it wasn’t a very difficult decision to go that way. They have an astonishing catalogue and some very inspiring artists. And have released some of my favourite records. The Siddeleys for instance is such a perfect group. Just to mention one of many. We are honoured to be on that label.

当時マイスペースに挙げた2～3曲をベースとしたものに、ほんの数週間で僕達に関心を持ってくれて、いくつかのレーベルからもオファーがあった。だけどMatinée Recordingsに決めることは難しい決断では無かった。彼らには驚くべきカタログがあって、とても興味深いアーティスト達も居た。彼らは僕のお気に入りのレコードもリリースしていた。例えばThe Siddeleysは完璧なグループだ、沢山の中から一つ言ったまでのことだけど。このレーベルに居れて誇りに思っている。

Anorak Crumble : Long-awaited brand-new single "At Attention" was just out few days ago. It's first time in seven years ! Why did it take so long ?

待望のニュー・シングル"At Attention"は何日か前に発表されましたね。7年ぶりとなりますが、何故時間がかかったのですか？

Stefan Larsen : Good question. There are a number of reasons why its been quite a while since we last released something; first of all we are all involved in a number of different projects and activities - from architecture, to movies and advertising, other music and much more. And then the forthcoming album has been finished for a while - but due to the current state of the world and very limited access to get out and play live we decided to postpone the release slightly. But now we couldn’t wait any longer. We are really looking forward to getting it out there and all I can say is that we have more releases lined up as well.

良い質問だね。沢山の理由がある。僕達が最期にリリースして以来かなり久しぶりだった。僕達は様々なプロジェクトや活動をしていた。建築から映画まで、そして広告や、他の音楽など沢山。その後、間もなく出るアルバムは暫くして完成した。だけど世界の現状と、外に出てライブでプレイするための行動が非常に限られていたので、リリースを少し延期することにした。だけど今、僕達はこれ以上待つことは出来なかった。これを出すのを楽しみにしていたし、僕が言える全ては、僕達にはより多くのリリースがあるということだ。

Anorak Crumble : Please tell us about your forth-coming album "The Swiss Army" ?

リリース予定のアルバム"The Swiss Army"について教えて下さい。

Stefan Larsen : As mentioned it has been finished for some time so I have had a chance to listen to it a few times now - and I must say that I am very pleased with it indeed. And I cannot wait for people to hear it as well. I think we have made a perfect record within our current abilities and hope we can get out there and present it live soon too.

言ったように、暫くして終えたので、何度か聴く機会も持てた…とても満足していると言いたい。同様に人々がこれを聴くのが待ちきれない。僕達の現在の出来る限りの力で完璧なレコードを作ったと思う。外に出てライブで表現出来たら良いなと願っている。

Anorak Crumble : What bands/artists do you listen to at the moment ?

現在はどのようなバンド / アーティストを聴いていますか？

Stefan Larsen : The mid to late sixties Kinks records, Happiness in Magazines by Graham Coxon, Sloppy Joe, Buddy Holly, the White Album by the Beatles, Fat White Family, and many more.

中期から後期の60年代のKinksのレコード、Graham CoxonのHappiness in Magazines, Sloppy Joe, Buddy Holly, The BeatlesのThe White Album, Fat White Family, など沢山。

Anorak Crumble : How's your life in Denmark ? Are there good venues, record shops, clubs etc.?

デンマークでの生活は如何ですか？良いライブハウス、レコード屋さん、クラブなどありますか？

Stefan Larsen : Life in DK is quite good even with the current virus going on. I have a young daughter who takes much of my time so the fact that clubs, concerts, football matches, etc. have been brought to a minimum since March hasn't bothered me too much. But of course I have an urge to get out and about now. Especially with our new album. And then I’m looking forward to some rescheduled concerts coming up. It seems the last couple of years have brought some excellent new record shops to Copenhagen. Venues are fine too but with Northern Portrait we have mainly played abroad.

コロナは続いているけどデンマークの生活はとても良いものだよ。僕には面倒をみなきゃならない幼い娘が居るから実際3月以降クラブやコンサートやフットボールのゲームへ行くことが少なくなってしまったけど、迷惑な訳では無い。勿論、出て行きたいという衝動があるけれど、特に僕達のニュー・アルバムを持って。それから再プランされたコンサートを楽しみにしています。ここ数年でコペンハーゲンに何軒かの素晴らしい新しいレコード・ショップが出来たようだ。ライブ・ハウスも良いけどNorthern Portraitは海外をメインにプレイしているから。

Anorak Crumble : Please tell us your future plans ?

今後の予定を教えて下さい。

Stefan Larsen : Michael, Jesper, Caspar and I are on the starting blocks ready for action as soon as someone asks us to come and play. Also, I have a little side-project that I fiddle with at the moment and hope to present soon. But as for Northern Portrait we are simply thrilled about the good reception of our new single and cannot wait to share the album with everyone.
