Formé à Leeds, en Angleterre, en 1985, sur les cendres des Lost Pandas, The Wedding Present comprenait dans son line up original David Gedge (chant, guitare) - seul membre permanent du groupe -, Peter Solowka (guitare), Keith Gregory (basse) et Shaun Charman (batterie). Après plusieurs singles, le combo sort en 1987 son premier album "George Best", ainsi nommé en l'honneur du légendaire footballeur nord-irlandais, le tout sur son propre label : Reception Records. Après la compilation "Tommy 1985-1987" publiée en 1988, Shaun Charman quitte le groupe - il est remplacé par Simon Smith - pour former The Popguns. On le retrouvera plus tard au sein de Turbocat, The Fireworks et maintenant Jetstream Pony. L'année suivante, sort leur second album "Bizarro" et Peter Solowka quitte lui aussi le groupe. Paul Dorrington le remplace à la guitare. Le troisième album "Seamonsters" paraît en 1991. En 1992, The Wedding Present propose une initiative originale : sortir le premier lundi de chaque mois un single comprenant une reprise en face B. Ces 45 tours seront édités par la suite en compilations : "Hit Parade 1" et "Hit Parade 2". Deux albums sortent les années suivantes : "Watusi" en 1994 et "Saturnalia" en 1996. En 1997, David Gedge met en sommeil le groupe pour se concentrer sur son nouveau projet musical : Cinerama. The Wedding Present est de retour en 2004 avec un nouveau line up. Toujours emmené par son leader, il a depuis sorti quatre albums : "Take fountain" en 2005, "El Rey" en 2008, "Valentina" en 2012 et "Going, going..." en 2016. The Wedding Present, c'est actuellement : David Gedge (chant et guitare), Jon Stewart (guitare), Melanie Howard (basse) et Chris Hardwick (batterie).
