The Hardy Boys was formed by John White in 1985. In 1989 David McArthur, Michael Bonini, Derek Mullen, and Ian McLachlan joined the band, became a 5-piece group and released "Wonderful Lie" on Stella 5 Records (re-issued on Firestation Records / 2015). In 1990 they supported bands such as River City People and Babylon Zoo, interacted with Blue Aeroplanes, and released the second single "Let The World Smother You" with Blue Aeroplanes' guitarist Angelo Brushini, produced by Larry Primrose who produced Trash Can Sinatras and Teenage Fanclub. This single was re-issued on Egg Records in 2005. They reunited in 2000 and performed a gig for the first time in about 25 years.

When did you start the hardy boys ?
1. いつ、THE HARDY BOYSを始めたのですか？
Formed by Johnny in 1985. He is the only original member. We all played in different bands in town, but we knew each other. I joined the band in 1987 and started writing songs with Johnny. In 1989 the band became the current lineup and make the best music.
「1985年にJohnnyによって結成された。彼が唯一のオリジナル・メンバーなんだ。町で僕達は皆それぞれ違ったバンドで演奏していたけれど、お互い知り合いだった。僕は1987年に加入して、Johnnyと僕で曲作りを一緒に始めた。1989年にバンドは現ラインナップとなり、ベストな音楽を作ることが出来た。」
Please tell us the origin of the band-name.
2. バンド名の由来を教えて下さい。
Johnny was a great fan of Thomas Hardy (1840-1928, a writer in Dorsetsia Southern England), so he named the band.

What kind of bands or artists were you influenced by?
3. どんなバンドやアーティストに影響を受けましたか？
We were all big fans of The Clash and The Buzzcocks. Johnny and I loved their melodies and were inspired to do it in a band. Believe it or not, The Hardy Boys was also influenced by acid house in the late 80's.
「僕達は皆THE CLASHとTHE BUZZCOCKSの大大ファンだった。Johnnyも僕もメロディが大好きでインスピレーションを得て、バンドでやりたかった。信じてもらえないかもしれないけど、THE HARDY BOYSは80年代終わりのアシッド・ハウスにも影響を受けていた。」
What bands and artists did you gigs with in the 80's and the early 90's?
4. 80年代から90年代初めにかけて、どんなバンド＆アーティストとギグを行いましたか？
There are too many to say! !! Our favorite band is River City People who were from Liverpool and signed with EMI and made some chart hits.
「沢山ありすぎて言えないくらい！！僕達のフェイヴァリット・バンドはリヴァプール出身でEMIと契約し少しチャート・ヒットも飛ばしたRIVER CITY PEOPLEだ。」

5. EGG RECORDSとの契約のいきさつを教えて下さい。
We discussed with Egg Records in 1990. Our distributor was gone, so we had to do something about it. 15 years later, he will release our single !!!
「1990年にEGG RECORDSと話し合った。僕達のディストリビューターが居なくなってしまったので、何とかしようと。その15年後にシングルをリリースしてくれるなんて！！！」

6. ベスト・アルバム『THE HARDY BOYS PLAY SONGS FROM THE LENIN AND McCARTHY SONGBOOK』がリリースされますね。
The best album title is about Lennon and McCartney, and we used them (for our album-title) because we are really influenced by them. I was planning to release it from my label Viva! Genius in 2005, but I couldn't. ZZZING !!! is a label of Niall Harkiss and Alan Forsyth and we are involved.
「アルバム・タイトルはレノンとマッカートニーのことで、僕達はこの二人から本当に影響を受けているので（アルバム・タイトルに）使った。2005年に自分のレーベルVIVA! GENIUSから出す予定だったんだけど実現出来なかった。ZZZING!!!は、Niall HarkissとAlan Forsythふたりのレーベルで、僕達も少しだけ関わっている。」
What do you think of Glasgow's indie music scene?
7. グラスゴーのインディ・ミュージック・シーンについて、どう思いますか？
In general I think the Glasgow-scene is always very healthy. It's brilliant, historically. There are many wonderful bands from The Pastels to Camera Obscura...an exciting town to grow. We're a little older, but the bands are still releasing great music so we can still do our best.
「概してグラスゴーのシーンはいつも非常に健全だと思う。歴史的見てもブリリアントだ。THE PASTELSからCAMERA OBSCURAまで、素晴らしいバンドがいっぱい存在している。成長するためにエキサイティングな町。僕達は少し年を取っているけれど、今でもバンド達が素敵な音楽をリリースしているから、まだ頑張れる。」
8. グラスゴーのオススメ・バンドは居ますか？
I like Punch and The Aposites. He plays a Tom Waits-style ballad on Pogues-style music. Also post-rock The Ocean Fracture... and Johnny's current band : Spy Movie.
「PUNCH AND THE APOSITESが好きなんだ。POGUESスタイルの音楽にTOM WAITSスタイルのバラードを奏でている。あとはポスト・ロックのTHE OCEAN FRACTURE…そして僕とJohnnyの今のバンドSPY MOVIEも。」
