American rock band from Athens Georgia, formed in 1980 led by Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Micheal Stipe. They signed to I.R.S. Records and released the debut album "Murmur" produced by Mitch Easter. Then they left I.R.S. Records with the album "Document (1987)" and debuted on the major label Warner Bros. Records with the album "Green (1988)". Their single "Shiny Happy People" featured vocals from Kate Pierson of the Athens band The B-52's. Their twelfth album "Reveal (2001)" featured Scott McCaughey of The Minus 5 and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies.
