Formed in 1993 under the name of Starfish, in Frankfurt Germany. Dr. Hanns-Christian Mahler, Martin Nelte (they are the members of Brideshead) & Johannes Schneider started to run the label Apricot Records and released the EP "This Is Mall Music(1995)" & the 2nd album "In and Out Love(2002)" incl. the cover song of Orange Juice. Their 1st album "Some People Have Some Fun (1998)" & the single "Spending Summer Days Outdoors (1999)" were released on Marsh-Marigold Records. Followed in 2015 the 3rd album "Never Grown Up" was released on Shelflife / Dufflecoat Records. They covered The Crooner's "Love Makes The Sunshine Bright" on the Shelflife compilation album "You're Still Young At Heart (2003)".

1. When / why did you form the bands : Starfish & Brideshead ?
何故バンドを結成したのですか？
Martin Nelte : I guess it must have been 1992 or 1993 when the band I was in broke up and I was looking for a new band. Playing and being in a band was something I was missing. Doing you own thing, making the music you like, concerts, recordings, that was amazing. My school friend Heiko wanted to start a new band. I knew that he was a pretty good guitar player. He was more into harder guitar-rock and not really twee indie-pop, but he wanted to start in a new direction. He said I could be the lead singer, if I would try to sing like David Bowie. I promised to try…Heiko also knew Hanns-Christian; he was kind of a multi-instrumentalists. He could play piano, guitar and synthesisers and had a drum computer and all those stuff. We convinced him, that he needed to be in our band. Then we found a drummer, Dirk, and Oliver from my first band played bass - and we were complete. After a year we’ve recorded our first EP “This is Mall Music”, but before the release we changed our name to Brideshead, inspired from the Evelyn Waugh novel, because there were already too many Starfishes in the sea,a label and a band with the same name were already on the scene. I always loved the TV series and the book. The series was very influential in the UK for the bands of the summer of 82. Just have look onto the cover of the first Haircut 100 album.

2. You released three albums. Please tell us about them (also tell us if you have album-concepts or kind of unique episodes) :

Why did you sign to Marsh-Marigold Records ?
何故Marsh-Marigoldと契約したのですか？
Martin Nelte : Oliver Goetzl, who runs Marsh-Marigold, wanted “Elegant” for his label, because he loved “nett!” the 7” single on our own label apricot records. Elegant was just a side-project of Hanns-Christian and myself, with German lyrics and an Alesis HR 16 drum computer. Oliver came from Hamburg to see us playing live with Brideshead and after the gig we were signed. We were so honoured and felt reallylucky, because Oliver run Marsh-Marigold, which was one of the leading indie pop record labels in the 90’s.

Martin Nelte : Most of the Brideshead and Apricot Records covers were done by our dear friend Mariko, who worked at the time for a big international advertising company. She has a great sense of style and understood what we had in mind - and she had access to a Mac Computer to do the graphic design. Remember, in those days you were not able to do a four-colour cover design on a windows 95 PC easily.
We used to give her adverts from mainly old issues of playboy magazines and she incorporated them into the artwork of the covers. By the way Mariko started also our Sublabel “Shibuyahot” with two friends, which was specialised in Japanese pop music.

●"In And Out Love" on Apricot Records (2002)
Martin Nelte : Our friend and drummer Daniel was offered a job in Hamburg and he moved away. We were desperate for a new drummer, but could not find a suitable one for many years. We had a few parttime drummers, but for one or the other reasons no one stayed long with the band. We had already recorded some songs for a new album with different drummers, but it was clear, that we were not able to finish a full album with enough new songs. Therefore we decided to take some old songs, we had already recorded after our first EP and put them onto an album.It was kind of a farewell compilation album and at first, we wanted to name it “Revisited”. But we never broke up and after years of searching we finally found a new drummer -Burkhard, which stayed with us until 2017.
僕達の友人でドラマーのDanielはHamburgで仕事があり彼は引っ越した。僕達は新しいドラマーを探していましたが、長年に渡り適切なドラマーを見つけることが出来なかった。パート・タイムのドラマーが何人かいましたが、何故かバンドに長く居なかった。 既に別のドラマーと一緒に新しいアルバムのためいくつかの曲を録音していましたが、十分な新しい楽曲でフル・アルバムを完成させることができなかったことは明らかだった。それで最初のEPの後に録音した古い曲をいくつか使い、アルバムに入れることにした。それは一種のお別れコンピレーション・アルバムで最初は"Revisited"という名前を付けたかった。しかし僕達は解散すること無く、何年にもわたる検索の結果、ついに新しいドラマーであるBurkhardを見つけた。2017年まで僕達と一緒にプレイした。
You covered the Orange Juice song "If You Could Love Me". Do you like them ? What bands / artists were you influenced by ?

Martin Nelte : Yes, I admire Edwyn Collins. His label Postcard was really ahead of it’s time in the beginning of the 80’s. We wanted to do an Edwyn Collins tribute for apricot records. Edwyn gave us his blessing and he was flattered. We received a few tapes from bands we loved. Some were great and some were not so great. But in the end we thought that our versions could not live up to their originals and we buried the project. However, our Brideshead song was already recorded and we put it on In and out (of) love. I guess you could hear our influences in our music. When we started in the beginning of the 90s for sure The Smiths were a strong influence, but Mc Carthy were even stronger. We loved the guitars and the lyrics. “I am a Wallet” is such a great album.… Mighty Mighty, Felt, Biff Bang Pow, nearly all the Creation bands, the Swedish scene Eggstone,… all the Sarah bands, Field Mice, Orchids, Stephen Duffy, One Thousand Violins, Lloyd Cole, Talk Talk, St. Etienne, The Style Council… the list could go on and on. P!O!P!

●"Never Grow Up" on Shelflife Records / Dufflecoat Records (2015)
Martin Nelte : You know, we are no longer students with a lot of time like we had when we started as a band. We all have families and full-timejobs. Hanns-Christian lives near the swiss border since a few years and to practice, record and play as a band requires a lot of planning. But we all made time in our lives for our music and in 2015 we finally had enough new songs of great quality to record an album again. I am a great fan of the Spanish illustrator Pintachan. I did not know him, but took my chances to write an email asking him to design our next album cover. Luckily Pintachan is an indie pop lover and was up for it. I absolutely love the cover he designed for us. He is a great guy. He accepted to be paid mainly in German liqourice.

The PV of "At 45 RPM" is very impressive because we can see a lot of nice indiepop records ! Was it your idea ?
"At 45 RPM"のプロモーション・ビデオは、沢山のインディ・ポップのレコードを見ることが出来て、とても印象的ですね。あなたのアイディアだったのですか？
Martin Nelte : That was all Zwen’s idea. He filmed the whole thing. The whole video was filmed on one weekend in the city center of Frankfurt, Zwen’s flat in Frankfurt and in my flat in Wiesbaden. It is my hand going through some of his 7”s. We are all collectors, you know.

Martin Nelte : Yes, but mostly the more poppier bands, like Bodines, Wolfhounds, Close Lobsters, Primal Scream etc). At first it was just a tape compilation from the NME 10 years after punk. Most of the bands had not much in common. But you could feel and hear the likeminded spirit.

Why did you sign to Shelflife (USA) and Dufflecoat (UK) ?
Shelflife (USA)やDufflecoat (UK)と契約したのは何故ですか？
Martin Nelte : Shelflife is our label since our second 7” single in 1999 and Gary from Dufflecoat wanted to do a 7” for his label five years ago, so they’ve released the album together. Ed is a good friend of ours. He did our first US tour. It was amazing. We’ve played the Popfest in NYC 1999, which he organised. And 17 years later we have played again a NYC Popfest, which is an unforgettable memory.

Martin Nelte : Hm, I think it is not really a secret anymore, is it? “Den Baron” is our guitarist and songwriter Zwen. He was a four-track artist and a one-man band when we met and we’ve signed him for apricot records. When our first guitarist left the band he was fist choice and we asked him, if he would join us. And he did! For more than 20 years now.

Martin Nelte : We love music, but also everything around it. The records, the artwork, design, style, image. Labels with a vision and an identity, like Factory, Creation, el, Sarah, 53rd & 3rd etc.. Having our own label was a dream. Releasing and discovering bands and music you really belief in, was a dream. So together with my very good friend Johannes we founded the label in 1995. Johannes came up with the name for the label. But we were aficionados. We never made any money with it. Everything went into the next release.

5.What bands/artists do you listen to at the moment ?
現在はどのようなバンド / アーティストを聴いていますか？
Martin Nelte : Right now in my car I’m listening to Beach Fossils, Nick Corbin, Rhye, Gary Olson, Khruangbin, Louise Philippe, Paul Weller, Real Estate. I try to make a new mix SD-card every few weeks.
今は車の中でBeach Fossils, Nick Corbin, Rhye, Gary Olson, Khruangbin, Louise Philippe, Paul Weller, Real Estateを聴いている。数週間ごとに新しいミックスSDカードを作るようにしている。
ドイツでの生活はどんな感じですか？良いライブ・ハウス、レコード屋さん、クラブはありますか？
Martin Nelte : I’m a lawyer for migration law and most of my day is spent at my office or at court. But I like my job. My clients are very thankful. Wiesbaden is not the best place for record shops or live music. Berlin, Hamburg and Munich have a better music scene. For the past years I usually travelled to London to visit concerts and record shops. Right now, during the COVID-19 pandemic all the venues are closed and no live events are happening. But I am looking forward to going to concerts again in the near future.

Martin Nelte : Soon after the release of Never Grow Up, our drummer Burkhard left the band. So for a couple of years, we just practiced for fun and started to make up new songs and we were looking for a new drummer. We found a new drummer Daniel from Weiterstadt, he is a multi talent. So the last years we spent practicing, playing the odd gig and created new songs. We have now recorded and fully mixed 6 new songs. They are just waiting to be released. Another 6 songs are in the pipeline but because of Covid-19 restrictions we are not able to record them right now. But I hope we can finish the album in 2021and release a new album with all new songs!
"Never Grow Up"のリリース直後、ドラマーのBurkhardがバンドを去った。なので2, 3年の間ただ楽しみのために練習し、新しい曲を作り始め、そして新しいドラマーを探していた。Weiterstadtで新しいドラマーDanielを見つけた。彼は多才だ。それで数年練習し奇妙なギグをして新曲を作った。今、6曲の新曲を録音して完全にミックスした。リリースされるのを待っている。さらに6曲がパイプラインにありますが、Covid-19のせいで現在録音することが出ない。だけと2021年にアルバムを完成させて、全曲ニュー・ソングの新しいアルバムをリリースできることを望んでいる！
