Osamu Shimada, The Caraway Interview

Catchy Shibuya-Kei guitar pop band, led by Osamu Shimada (Swinging Popsicle) from Japan. The self-titled album was released on Bluebadge label in 2006. Blue-very label released split EP Series vol. 1"Caraway / Sweetport" in 2019. It includes Louis Philippe cover "You Mary You". For fans of Flipper's Guitar and Hideki Kaji !

Anorak Crumble : You just released the first 6-track Christmas CD-R single "Holiday". Please tell us about this EP.

初めての6曲入りクリスマスCD-Rシングル"Holiday"をリリースしたばかりですね。このEPについて教えて下さい。

Osamu Shimada : This year I couldn't perform live with the band-members because of coronavirus. So I started recording because I wanted to make  music. It was the first work that we recorded together.

はい。今年はコロナの影響で、いつものバンドメンバーでライブができませんでした。

ならば、せめて音源を作ろうじゃないかということで、録音を始めました。初めてバンドメンバーで一緒に録音をした作品になりました。

Anorak Crumble : Your song "A Very Merry Christmas" is included in the compilation album of Shiny Happy Records, "Comfort and Joy". Why did you participate in this compilation?

Shiny Happy Recordsのコンピレーション、V.A. / Comfort and Joyに"A Very Merry Christmas"が収録されていますね。このコンピに参加したのは何故ですか？

Osamu Shimada : In June Eko, the owner of Shiny Happy Records asked us to do a remote live stream. So we collected performance videos from each band member's home and distributed this in July. Then he also asked us to join their Christmas compilation album.

今年の6月にShiny Happy RecordsのオーナーのEkoさんに、リモートの配信ライブをやりませんか？とお誘いを受けまして、7月にバンドメンバーそれぞれの自宅から演奏動画を集めて、動画配信しました。それがきっかけになって、クリスマスのコンピレーションアルバムにも参加しませんか？という流れになりました。

Anorak Crumble : Blue-Very label released "The Selection of The Caraway" in vinyl in July 2020. Please tell us about this LP.

Blue-Veryレーベルから2020年7月に"The Selection of The Caraway"がアナログで限定リリースされました。このLPについて教えて下さい。

Osamu Shimada : There was a suggestion to make an vinyl LP from Mr. Nakamura, the owner of the Blue-Very label. He just want to listen to The caraway on vinyl. I was also happy, so I decided to cooperate with his proposal. Mr. Nakamura chose the songs from our first album and the singles released in recent years. It's a nice selection like the best compilation album.

Blue-Veryレーベルのオーナー、中村さんのお誘いで、アナログLPを作りませんか？という提案がありました。単純にアナログでキャラウェイを聴きたい！という動機だったらしいですが、僕も嬉しかったので、中村さんの案に協力することになりました。1stアルバムと、近年リリースしたシングルの中から、中村さんが収録曲をチョイスしてくれました。まさにベスト盤的なセレクションになってます。

Anorak Crumble : Last year you also released a cassette split single with Sweet Port on the Blue-Very label, covering Louis Philippe's "You Mary You".

去年に同じくBlue-VeryレーベルからSweet Portとのカセット・スプリット・シングルをリリースし、Louis Philippeの"You Mary You"をカバーしていましたね。

Osamu Shimada : Yes. Most of the singles in recent years have been released independently on CDR, but Blue-Very label asked us to release a split cassette single in 2019. Mr. Nakamura also asked us to record one cover song, so I covered "You Mary You" of my favorite Louis Philippe, which I had covered when I was a student. Mr. Philippe accepted to do it.  I tried to be as faithful as possible to the original..I think it is quite good. The DJ played this at a live event after releasing, I didn't notice it's my cover song (lol).

はい。近年のシングルはCDRでの自主リリースが主だったのですが、2019年に初めてBlue-Veryレーベルからスプリットカセットシングルをリリースしませんか？とお誘いを受けまして、制作することになりました。オーナーの中村さんからリクエストで、カバー曲を一曲収録してほしいと言われ、以前、学生の頃にカバーしたことがあった、大好きなLouis Philippeの”You Mary You”をカバーさせていただきました。もちろんご本人のフイリップ・オークレーさんにも承諾済みです。なるべくオリジナルに忠実に...を心がけまして、かなり本家に近い仕上がりになったかな...と思います。リリース直後のライブイベントで、DJの方がこれをかけて下さったのですが、一瞬、自分のカバー曲とは、自分でも気付かなかったことがありました（笑）。

Anorak Crumble : What kind of  bands / artists were you influenced by ?

影響を受けたバンド / アーティストは？

Osamu Shimada : Flipper’s Guitar, Johnny Dee, Aztec Camera, Style Council, True Love Always...to make music as The Caraway.

キャラウェイに関して言えば、Flipper’s Guitar,Johnny Dee,Aztec Camera,Style Council,True Love Alwaysあたりが主に影響受けたバンドです。

Anorak Crumble : How is your life in Japan? Are there any good record shops or clubs ?

日本での生活は如何ですか？良いレコード屋さんやクラブはありますか？

Osamu Shimada : I live in Japan for a long time, it's easy to live in. I currently live in Chiba, not in Tokyo, but it's easy to access to go there, also easy to check out new music on my subscription while traveling by train to Tokyo. Mr. Nakamura of the Blue-Very label runs a record shop "Disques Blue-Very" in Koenji, Tokyo. It is a meeting place for various bands and artists, also place to get information.

ずっと日本に住んでますが、住みやすいですよ。僕は今、東京ではなく郊外の千葉に住んでいますが、上京する時の電車移動の時間はサブスクで新譜をチェックするのに都合の良い時間になってます。Blue-Veryレーベルの中村さんが、東京は高円寺にレコードショップ”Disques Blue-Very”を経営してます。そこがいろいろなバンドやアーティストのミーティングプレイス、情報交換の場所になっています。

Anorak Crumble : Please tell us your future plans.

今後の予定を教えて下さい。

Osamu Shimada : We are planning to have the last live of this year on December 26th, 2020 in Shimokitazawa Tokyo. I will play alone on this day.

2020年12月26日に東京は下北沢で、今年最後のライブをやる予定です。この日は僕は一人でプレイする予定です。
