Firestation Records is a great German label which is known for such nice releases of the compilation series "The Sound of Leamington Spa", re-issues and retrospectives from 80's and early-90's indie pop bands …as you know ! Let's talk about it with Uwe Weigmann !

Anorak Crumble : You started to run the record shop in Berlin recently ? What kind of vinyls / CD's do you sell ? Do you enjoy it ?
最近ベルリンにレコード・ショップをオープンさせましたね？どんな感じのレコード / CDを売っていますか？楽しいですか？
Uwe Weigmann : We started our record shop last june in the groundfloor of the house where i live since 2000. It was the logical next step. I am selling records for more than 25 years and there was no room to stock further records in my flat. We're now have a big storage room along with two sales areas. We're selling any kind of music, mostly vinyl, second hand items only ! It is great fun and we're looking forward to re-open the shop as soon as the pandemic is gone. I love to sit in front of the shop with a beer in my hands and to watch customers and friends come by for a talk or for buying records.
私達は去年の6月に、僕が2000年から住んでいる家の一階でレコード・ショップを始めました。それは論理的に次のステップでした。僕は25年以上もレコードを売っていて、僕のフラットに更なるレコードをストックする部屋がなかった。私達はいま、２つのセールス・エリアに加えて、大きな倉庫を持っている。色んな種類の音楽を売っています。大部分はアナログ、中古アイテムだけです。コロナが終わったら再びオープン出来ることを楽しみにしています。僕の手にビールを持って店のフロントに座っていたり、お客さんや友達が来て話したりレコードを買ったりするのを見ているのが好きです。
Anorak Crumble : How do you find such nice obscure indie pop bands, especially from 80's to 90's ?
どのようにして、特に80年代から90年代にかけての素晴らしいオブスキュア・インディ・ポップ・バンドを見つけるのですか？
Uwe Weigmann : It is amazing, although I am always thinking that i'm familiar with most UK guitarpopbands from the 1980's and early 1990's there is still so much to track down. Over the years I have put together a very long list with band names on which come into question for a potentially release. I started the list about 20 years ago and it goes bigger and bigger every month. Unfortunately some bands from it will be lost forever but it is so fantastic to find a "new" band from the past and to get in touch with the former band members. Really, I wish we could put out much more records, there are still so many projects I would love to complete. Since our work has to cover cost of living for three people I know that these days our main focus is to sell second hand records online and in the shop but Firestation Records is my life's work.
驚きだよ。僕は1980年代から1990年代初頭のUKギターポップ・バンドの大部分を知っているけれど、まだ追跡することが沢山ある。何年にもかけて、とても長いバンドのリストを繋ぎ合わせている。このリストを20年前に始めて毎月長く大きくなってしまっている。不運なことにいくつかのバンドは永遠に失われてしまうかも知れないけれど、バンドのメンバーとコンタクトを取って過去の"新しい"バンド達を見つけるのはとても素敵なこと。本当にもっとレコードをリリースしたい。まだ完全にやりたい沢山のプロジェクトがある。3人の生活費をカバーしなければならない、近年オンラインやショップで中古レコードを売ることがメイン・フォーカスとなっているけれどFirestationは僕の生涯の仕事です。
Anorak Crumble : How is your life in Berlin, Germany ? Are there any good record labels, clubs, etc ?
ベルリンでの生活はどんな感じですか？良いレーベルやクラブはありますか？
Uwe Weigmann : In normal times I am spending my leisure time at the football stadium supporting my favourite team in town. I don't go out clubbing very often anymore. When we stopped djing years ago I lost interest in it completely. I went to some "What Difference Does It Make" parties the last year. It was good fun although I gave up dancing in public years ago, even if I am drunk! I'm not sure either about indiepop record labels in Germany. I don't think that there are many these days. My mate Ronny is running Kleine Unterground Schallplatten in Augsburg. I think he is doing a great job. Then there is a small record label here in town called Dreams Never End Berlin running by another mate whose name is Andi. Besides this there are the two big ones, Marina Records and Tapete Records. Really glad to see that Marina Records is still going.
通常、僕の趣味の時間はフットボール・スタジアムへ行き街のお気に入りのチームをサポートしています。もうクラブへは、しょっちゅう行かなくなりました。何年か前にDJは辞めたんだよ。完全に興味が沸かなくなってしまった。去年“What Difference Does It Make“パーティへ行ったよ。楽しかったけどダンスもしなくなりました、酔っ払った時でさえもね！ドイツにインディ・ポップ・レーベルがあるかは分からない。今日は沢山無いのではないかな。友達のRonnyがAugsburgでKleine Unterground Schallplattenレーベルをやっているよ。彼はグレイトな仕事をしていると思う。ベルリンでDreams Never Endレーベルを僕の友達Andiがやっている。Marina RecordsやTapete Recordsという大きなレーベルがある。Marina Recordsがまだやっていて本当に嬉しいよ。

Uwe Weigmann : My alltime favorite bands / artists from Germany are Bazooka Cain, Bernd Begemann, The New Colours, The Pariahs, The Groovy Cellar and Start !

いつ頃からインディ・ポップを聴き始めましたか？
Uwe Weigmann : My love for classic indipop began in 1985 when I started to fall in love with all the great bands as The Smiths, Aztec Camera, The Style Council, Everything But The Girl, Lloyd Cole, Prefab Sprout, The Housemartins, Orange Juice... One of my first indiepop LPs was "An Inward Revolution" by Big Sound Authority. I bought it back in the summer 1985 just because I was in love with the artwork. It is still one of my favorite albums of all time and I think it was a great start for me to buy records from bands just because of the sleeve. In 1986 I started to read fanzines. There was one german fanzine called Pop Noise. They did a lot of reviews, mainly 7" and 12" singles and they had a section which was labeled "Guitar Pop". In every issue they discussed about 20-25 obscure new releases. So, I found out about all those fantastic new bands like Laugh, The Submarines, The Wishing Stones, Mighty Mighty, The Waltones, Rumblefish, The Servants etc. Of course it was nearly impossible to track down those records back then here in Berlin, I was just 16 and I had no clue how to get them. In november 1986 my old mate Stefan told me about a record shop called Mr. Dead and Mrs. Free. We visit them for the first time a day after we went to see the Housemartins playing live. The shop stocked everything we could ever ask for back then. I bought “Fruit Machine“ EP by The Brilliant Corners and “Sheep“ 12" by the Housemartins on that day. Mr Dead and Mrs. Free became the most important shop for us. It was the place were me and my friends met at least two times the week for many many years. In 1991 Olaf and me published our first fanzine. Soon after we released compilations on tape and CD. Around these years I started djing and my fanzine serie “Happy to be Sad“ before the label was founded eventually in 1998.

現在の世界中のインディ・ポップについて、どう思いますか？
Uwe Weigmann : To be honest, I have no idea about the current situation of indiepop. I don't know any of the new bands or record labels. I gave up on it years ago and I have absolute no interest in new indiepop bands or in the current indiepop-scene. I will always love classic guitarpop but when I listen to current bands which are influenced by those bands from the past I feel nothing apart from boredom. I still buy a lot of new releases from record labels as Colemine Records, Izipho Soul, Favorite Records, Numero Group, Athens Of The North, Light In The Attic, Timmion, Aloha Got Soul, Acid Jazz or Sundae Soul. There is so much great music out there, I will never get tired of it.
正直言って今のインディ・ポップの状況については分かりません。新しいバンドもレーベルも分からない。何年か前に諦めたんだ、新しいインディ・ポップ・バンドや現在のインディ・ポップ・シーンに全く興味が沸かなくなってしまった。僕はこれからもクラシックなギターポップを好きでいるでしょう。だけど、過去のバンドから影響を受けた現在のバンド達を聴いた時に、退屈以外は何も感じない。僕は今でも、Colemine Records, Izipho Soul, Favorite Records, Numero Group, Athens Of The North, Light In The Attic, Timmion, Aloha Got Soul, Acid Jazz or Sundae Soulレーベルから沢山のニュー・リリースを買っています。これらはグレイトで疲れません。
Anorak Crumble : Are you planning to release new compilation "The Sound of Leamington Spa" series ? Can you tell us about future releases ?
新しい"The Sound of Leamington Spa" シリーズのリリース予定はありますか？今後のリリースの予定を教えて下さい。
Uwe Weigmann : Since part 9 was released two years ago I already collected material for at least two further volumes of the series. To be honest, the last two volumes didn't sell very well. We lost money on both releases, something we can't afford to do very often. Apart from that it always takes a lot of time to put together the artwork and booklet. Then we have to do mastering which is difficult and causes further costs which are not necessary when we put out retrospective releases or reissues by the bands. I would love to continue the series and it makes me some kind of sad that the last volumes didn't sell very well. Part 9 is my favourite volume from the series and there would be great material available for volume 10 & 11. Also, I already collect material for a possible second volume of the German edition. But same here, I still have no idea if I will ever finish the work on it. At the moment we are working on six new releases. We can't wait to put them out once the pandemic is over.
パート 9を2年前にリリースして以来、少なくとも2シリーズ位のマテリアルを集めています。正直言って、最後の2シリーズは余り良く売れなかったんだ。両者のリリースでお金が無くなってしまった。かなり余裕が無くなってしまった。繋ぎ合わせてアートワークをやるのも、いつも時間がかかってしまう。それから、バンドのリイシューやレトロスペクティブ・リリースをやるのに不要なコストがかかる難しいマスタリングをやらなければならない。このシリーズを続けたいけれど、最後の2枚が売れなかったから悲しかった。Part 9は僕のお気に入りで、ボリューム10や12も素晴らしい素材です。そしてまた、ドイツ盤のセカンド・ボリュームのために集めているんだ、出来るかどうか分からないけれど。今は6つのニュー・リリースの為に仕事しています。コロナが終わったら、これらをリリースするのが待ちきれないよ。
