Japanese guitar pop band Milk Film released a digital remix single in April 2020. Songwriter Tomohiro Kondo formed All Twin's Birthday in tbe 90's. Let's talk about them with Tomohiro !
日本のギター・ポップ・バンドMilk Filmは2020年の4月にデジタルでリミックス・シングルをリリースしました。ソングライターのTomohiro Kondo氏は90年代にAll Twin's Birthdayを結成。これらのことを彼に語ってもらいました！
Anorak Crumble : Please tell us about your former band All Twin's Birthday in the 90's ?
あなたの90年代の前バンドAll Twin's Birthdayについて教えて下さい。
Tomohiro Kondo : All Twin's Birthday was a three piece band by Yuka Banno (bass, chorus) , Bo Suzuki (drums) and Tomohiro Kondo (guitar, vocals). We just thought it would be happy to have the band with these three people so we formed. Automatically we started to play music like UK indie and sounds I listened to in real time with English lyrics, not Japanese. About the composition : firstly we tried to write more melodious songs, sounds like Josef K. I loved the guitar-style of Malcolm Ross but I couldn't sing songs so cool like Paul Haig. We played original songs as well as cover tunes of instrumental on the stage and recorded them too... It was different from other bands and there were no bands like us at the time I suppose.

の3ピース・バンドです。目標とするバンドがあった訳ではなく、この3人でバンドをやったら楽しいだろうな、と思って結成しました。自然と日本語詞から英詞へ、サウンドもUKインディなど、当時リアルタイムで聴いていた音に近付いていきました。作曲に関しては、初期は Josef K みたいな音で、よりメロディアスな曲を創ってみたい、と思っていました。Malcolm Ross のギタースタイルが好きだったのですが、僕は Paul Haig のようにはクールに歌えなかったので。 All Twin's Birthday が他のギター・バンドと違っていた点は、オリジナルやカバーのインスト・ナンバーをライブで演奏したり、音源に残したことかもしれません。当時、そういうインディ・バンドはあまり他にいなかったと思います。
Anorak Crumble : All Twin's Birthday joined the great compilation "Behave Yourself" with They Go Boom !!, Bulldozer Crash, Tricycle Popstar and Lucy Was An Engine on Behavior Saviour Records in 1993. Please let us know about the contract with this label.
All Twin's Birthdayは1993年Behavior Saviour Recordsからのグレイトなコンピレーション"Behave Yourself"に、They Go Boom !!, Bulldozer Crash, Tricycle Popstar, Lucy Was An Engineと共に参加しましたね。このレーベルとの契約について教えて下さい。
Tomohiro Kondo : Kazushige Kanazawa who was a shop assistant of Rough Trade Records' shop in Tokyo asked me to play for his party "Love so fine" in July 1992. It was a club-night in Ikebukuro, Tokyo and we played with Tricycle Popstar (a solo-project of Masahiro Kodama, also the label-owner of Behavior Saviour). He sang and played guitar to put music. His voice, melody and sound were very attractive for us and he also liked our play. We had received a letter from him just after the gig. He asked us to release a 7" on his label. It was his idea to record an original instrumental number "Rudy Van Gelder’s Secret Note" for the B side of this 7". He produced so well for All Twin's Birthday. This 7" was released on Behavior Saviour / catalogue number 007. The compilation "Behave Yourself (008)" included our old song "Everytime We Say Good-Bye", added overdubbing of keyboard by him.
ROUGH TRADE SHOP ショップ店員をしていた金澤君がオーガナイズしていた”Love so fine"というイベントに出演の依頼が来ました。1992年の7月頃のことだったと思います。東京の池袋のライブハウスの深夜のイベントで、その夜の対バンが Tricycle Popstar (Masahiro Kodama君のソロプロジェクト)、つまり Behavior Saviour のレーベルオーナーでした。児玉君はトラックを流しながら、自分の歌とギターを被せるスタイルでライブ演奏をしていましたが、僕らは、その声、メロディ、サウンド全てに魅了されました。彼も僕らのライブ演奏を気に入ってくれたようで、すぐに手紙をくれました。その手紙には「僕のレーベルから7inch をリリースしませんか」と書いてありました。今、考えると 7inch のB面に“Rudy Van Gelder’s Secret Note”というオリジナルのインスト・ナンバーを収録したのは児玉君のアイデアです。児玉君は All Twin's Birthday を巧くプロデュースしてくれました。その 7inch が Behavior Saviour のカタログナンバー007です。そして "Behave Yourself" が008。児玉君は、僕らの過去の音源 “Everytime We Say Good-Bye” にキーボードをオーバーダビングして、そのコンピレーションに収録してくれました。
Anorak Crumble : When did you start the band ? Who is in Milk Film ?
いつからバンドをスタートしたのですか？Milk Filmについて教えて下さい。
Tomohiro Kondo : I started the band when I was 15 or 16. Firstly we covered songs like The Jam "In The City" to play because we had no original songs (we had them after we formed All Twin's Birthday). The members of Milk Film were Yuka Banno (vocals, guitar, chorus, bassist of All Twin's Birthday), Kayoko Yamauchi (vocals, guitar, chorus - she was also a bassist of Go-Cart-Twist and Chicago Bass, sounds like between alternative and new wave - I love them and used to go to their gigs often) and Tomohiro Kondo (guitar, bass, percussions) at the time. It means two vocalists of Milk Film could play bass and guitar, chorus too. I already known their chorus was really wonderful so they became main vocalists in our band. I just wanted to write songs... They agreed with me.
僕が最初に参加したバンドのことですか？ 15才か16才位のことです。まだオリジナル曲を創れなかったので、The Jam の In the city とかをカバーしていました。オリジナル曲を書き始めたのは、All Twin's Birthdayを結成してからです。
Milk Film のメンバーは、Yuka Banno (vocal, guitar, chrous), Kayoko Yamauchi (vocal, guitar, chrous), Tomohiro Kondo (guitar, bass, percussion)です。前述の通り、Yuka Bannoさんは、元All Twin's Birthday のベーシストです。Kayoko Yamauchiさんは元go-cart-twist のベーシストで、All Twin's Birthday が活動していた頃、よく対バンしていました。その後, chicago bass というバンドでも活躍していました。ジャンルで言うと、オルタナティブと new wave の中間のような音で、僕は大好きで、よくライブに通っていました。つまり、Milk Film のボーカリストふたりは、ギターも弾けるベーシストで、コーラスも担当していました。僕は、彼女達のコーラスワークの素晴らしさを知っていたので、ふたりをメインボーカルにして、作曲に専念してみたかったのです。幸運にも、ふたりは快諾してくれました。
Anorak Crumble : Please tell us about the album "I'll Remember October".
アルバム"I'll Remember October"について教えて下さい。
Tomohiro Kondo : We recorded two songs for a compilation. We worried it will be released or not so we planned to record the album to put these songs. We planned the first song of the album will be "Old bookshop named Saturdays" and last song will be "Small hours" but I could write a song "I want to be your cat" while the recordings. This is the best song of our album for me. I already had kind of images to write songs "Old bookshop named Saturdays" and "Small hours". I could write the song "I want to be your cat" so immediately and automatically... a lot of miracles to finish to write this song. The members of the band also advised about arrangement and chorus-work for me. I wanted to record the album "I'll Remember October" with vocals, chorus, guitar, bass and percussions. I didn't want to use piano, horn and strings. The concept was very important for the album. I tried to play various kind of guitar. Finally a sense of unity had been created. Then "Small hours" became the first and "Old bookshop named Saturdays" became the last song in our album. The most important song was "I want to be your cat". Thinking about good ideas was the real pleasure of making this album.
そもそもは、コンピレーションの参加の依頼がきたので、2曲程、Milk Film として新曲を制作しました。そのコンピレーションの話が、よくある事ですが、うやむやになったので、2曲がお蔵になるのも勿体無いと思い、セルフリリースでのアルバム制作を計画しました。当初、"old bookshop named Saturdays" がアルバムの1曲目、"small hours" がラストの曲と想定して作業していました。でも、レコーディングの最中に "I want to be your cat" を書くことが出来ました。この曲は、アルバムの中でも特に大事な曲です。"old bookshop named Saturdays" と "small hours" に関しては、こんな感じの曲を創りたいというイメージがありました。"I want to be your cat" に関しては、アルバム制作の
作業に没頭している間に、まるで自動手記のように、するすると気付くと曲と歌詞が完成していたのです。この曲のレコーディングは奇跡の連続でした。メンバーもアレンジやコーラスワークで、様々なアイデアを提供してくれてレコーディングを完了することが出来ました。
多分、この前後のことだと思いますが、アルバム"I'll Remember October" は、ボーカル、コーラス、ギター、ベース、そしてパーカッションだけで完成させようというコンセプトが、僕の中で芽生えました。鍵盤やホーンやストリングスは一切使わない。(一部、シンセのように聴こえるパートもありますが、それもギターを逆回転させて編集しなおしたものです。)
アルバムを制作する時にコンセプトはとても大事です。ボーカル、コーラスを活かす為に、色々なギターの奏法を試しました。おかげでアルバムに、制作初期には想像出来なかった、ある統一感が生まれたと思っています。曲順を改めて考える際、"I want to be your cat" を中心に据えることにしました。結果、"small hours" が
1曲目に、"old bookshop named Saturdays" が事実上のラストの曲になりました。こんな風に、当初のコンセプトを乗り越えるアイデアが、制作過程で生まれることが、アルバム創りの醍醐味です。
Anorak Crumble : Milk Film joined the compilation "Kindassault vol.1" on Manila's Kindassault Records in 2008. Why did you work with this label ?
Milk Filmは12008年にマニラのKindassault Recordsからのコンピレーション"Kindassault vol.1"に参加しましたね。何故このレーベルと組んだのですか？
Tomohiro Kondo : Wow ! It's a long time ago ! There were some requests to join compilations but we turned down if they have no concept. "Kindassault vol.1" compilation had a high quality, joined many great bands... Especially a song of "Yoko Kikuchi" from US was so wonderful ! Sounds like Pavement a little bit, twist and earthy so we decided to join this compilation. But the song order is incorrect... "Yoko Kikuchi"'s song is featuring in track 5 but it's written track 6, song order track 13 and 14 is wrong , too...Apple Crumble Records was the only one shop to deal with this compilation.
2008年! そんなに前の話でしたか!その前後もコンピレーションの参加の依頼はいくつかあったのですが、統一感の感じられないアルバムは全てお断りしていました。でも、"Kindassault vol.1" は参加アーティストのクオリティがとても高かったのです。特にアメリカ在住の日本人女性 "Yoko Kikuchi"さんの曲は素晴らしかった! ちょっとペイブメントに似た、少し捻じれた感じで、尚且つアーシーな曲調に惹かれました。この曲と一緒に収録されるなら、と参加しました。ただ、コンピレーションではよくある話なのですが、曲順が間違っているんです。"Yoko Kikuchi"さんは、5曲目に収録されているのですが、ジャケットには、6曲目と表記されてしまっています。もし、これから聴く方がいましたら、ご注意下さい。13曲目と14曲目もスイッチしちゃってます。レーベルに言ったのですが、「合ってるよ」と言われました。そういえば、このコンピレーションを日本で唯一扱って頂いたのが、apple crumble recordさんでしたね。
Anorak Crumble : Milk Film just released the brand-new single "Someone Who Needs You". No.5 mix and Cloudgazer mix sounds reminds us Manchester early 90's ! Who made the cover of the record sleeve ?
Milk Filmは新曲"Someone Who Need You"をリリースしたばかりですね。No.5 mixと Cloudgazer mixサウンドは90年代のマンチェスターを思い起こさせます。誰がレコード・スリーブを手掛けているのですか？
Tomohiro Kondo : As I mentioned before we made the album "I'll Remember October" with guitar, bass and percussions... Actually we recorded "Someone Who Need You No.5 mix" and "Cloudgazer mix" before we made this album. For "No.5 mix" we added phraze of piano and for "Cloudgazer mix" we added arrangements of strings and horns. So these two songs were not included in the album. But I thought I put one mix track between "I want to be your cat" and "Old bookshop named Saturdays". I slowed down tempo of "Cloudgazer mix", added new phraze of guitar and change chords... I tried to arrange for fitting for the album. It means the song "For once mix" in the album is a remix version of "Cloudgazer mix". I feel each remixes are nice so we decided to release them as a single. I am very happy if remixes reminds us Manchester movement in the 90's. I still love them... guitar pop, ambient, house music, acid jazz... We used to listen to them, no prejudice, good music is good ! "Cloudgazer mix" is similar to The Orb "Little Fluffy" who produced Primal Scream "Higher Than the Sun". I edited and flashed guitar-riff in my mind automatically. Japanese illustrator Ma-san designed our record-sleeves. She loves indie pop so it's easy to communicate to do it. Inner sleeves are very nice too. Yuka Banno did the artwork of the first album.
前述したように、"I'll Remember October" はボーカル、コーラス、ギター、ベース、パーカッションのみで創ったアルバムです。実は "Someone Who Need You" の No.5 mix と Cloudgazer mix は "I'll Remember October"
より先に作成したトラックです。No.5 mix には鍵盤のフレーズが、Cloudgazer mix にはストリングスとホーンのフレーズが含まれています。だから、この2曲はアルバムに収録しませんでした。本来は、"I want to be your cat" と "old bookshop named Saturdays" の間にどちらかの mix を入れるつもりだったんですが。Cloudgazer mix のテンポを落として、新しいギターのフレーズを加えたり、コード進行を
変えたりして、アルバムの流れに沿うようにリアレンジしました。つまり、アルバム"I'll Remember October" 収録のfor once mix は Cloudgazer mix のリミックス・バージョンなのです。アルバム"I'll Remember October" と切り離して、この2曲を改めて聴くと、それぞれの良さがあるな、と感じたのでシングルとしてリリースしました。90年代のマンチェスターを想起して頂けたとしたら、とても嬉しいです。90年代のマンチェスター・ムーブメントを一過性のものと捉える方もいますが、僕は今でも大好きです。ギター・ポップもアンビエント・ハウスもアシッド・ジャズも様々なカラード・ミュージックも、当時は皆、偏見も無く、良いものは良い、と聴いていました。Cloudgazer mix は当時、プライマル・スクリームのハイヤー・ザン・ザ・サンを手掛けた The Orb のLittle fluffy clouds と少し曲調が似ていますね。ひたすらギターのプレーズを編集しているうちに、偶然あのギター・リフが生まれました。レコード・スリープに関しては、ほぼ、Ma.さんというイラストレーターの方に一任しています。indie pop や twee pop に造詣が深い方なので、コミュニケーションも良好です。アルバム"I'll Remember October" は表ジャケも良いのですが、Ma.さん書き下ろしの裏ジャケも素晴らしいです。milk film の音楽に興味が無い方も一見の価値があります。因みに1stアルバムのアートワークは、Yuka Bannoさんです。
Anorak Crumble : What are your favourite bands of all time ? When did you start to listen to indie pop music ?
あなたのお気に入りのバンドは？いつ頃からインディ・ポップを聴き始めましたか？
Tomohiro Kondo : There are so many bands ! Josef K, Orange Juice, Aztec Camera... Postcard Records ! I like Television Personalities, of course. The last album of The Pastels "Slow Summit" is really wonderful ! Also Sarah Records, él Records, The Monochrome Set... So many ! I started to listen to indie pop music when I was a high-school student.
沢山あってきりがないのですが。Josef K, Orange Juice, Aztec Camera...つまりはPostcard Records ですね。Television Personalities も勿論好きです。Pastels の最新作 Slow summit は本当に素晴らしいです。あと Sarah とか el とか Monochrome Set...本当にきりがないので、この辺でやめましょう。インディ・ポップの聴き始めは、遅い方です。高校生になってからです。
Anorak Crumble : How is your life in Tokyo ? Are there any good record labels, clubs, etc ? Have you got good memories about indie music scene in Tokyo in the 90's ?
東京での生活はどんな感じですか？良いレーベルやクラブはありますか？90年代の東京のインデイ・ミュージック・シーンについて、良い思い出はありますか？
Tomohiro Kondo : I can't explain about indie music scene at the moment... So I would like to tell you about the story from 1993 to 2003. To join the compilation of Behavior Saviour Records was really wonderful memory for me. There were no PC and DAW in my room, we recorded songs using an expensive 8 track cassette MTR at the time. Me and Mr. Kodama recorded together in his bedroom. We created music, sometimes he cooked meals for me, had a walk outside, etc. There was fantastic club which was called "Zoo" (later changed name to "Slits") and organized nice club-night "Love Parade". We could listen to wonderful music there. There was a good venue "Jam" in Shinjyuku. We played there many times as All Twin's Birthday and Milk Film. They had a studio for rehearsal so we could see bands of my friends while we practiced. I love this venue but it closed recently. We supported TV Personalities for the event of Vinyl Japan Records. So I brought the first album of them to get a signature of Dan Tracey. But I couldn't speak to him because I was so excited !
東京の現状はご存知のように、上手く説明出来ません。なので、1993～2003あたりの話をしましょうか。やはり Behavior Saviour Records に参加出来たことはとても良い思い出です。当時は、部屋にPCもDAWもありませんでした。僕らは高価で重い、8トラックのカセットMTRで
レコーディングしていました。でも僕も児玉君も同じ型のMTRを所有していたので、マスターのカセットテープ一本持って、児玉君のベッドルーム兼プライベートスタジオで録音作業を
進めることが出来ました。児玉君に凝った手料理をふるまってもらったり、皆で散歩したり
しながら音楽をクリエイトしていました。
下北沢には ZOO(のちのslits)という素晴らしいクラブがありました。ラブパレードもそこで開催されていましたね。そこに行けば、いつも素晴らしい音楽を浴びるように聴けました
憶えています。新宿には Jam というライブハウスがあって、All Twin's Birthday も Milk Film も何度もライブをしました。ライブハウスの奥にリハーサルスタジオがあったので、練習の合間に友達のライブを観たりできたんです。大好きなライブハウスでしたが、先頃クローズしてしまって。あと、そういえば、新宿のビニールジャパンのイベントで、television personalities のフロントアクトもさせてもらいました。ダン・トレイシーにサインを貰おうと、彼らの1stアルバムのアナログ盤を持っていったのですが、緊張してしまって、話しかけることすら出来ませんでした。
