The great Japanese indie pop band Sloppy Joe will release their new album "Waiting For The Night Begins" and LP version of "With Kisses Four" (last album) on Fastcut Records in July 2020. Let's talk about it !!
グレイトな日本のインディ・ポップ・バンドSloppy Joeが2020年7月にアルバム"Waiting For The Night Begins" と前作"With Kisses Four”のLPバージョンをFastcut Recordsさんからリリースする予定です。それでは語って頂きましょう！
Anorak Crumble : Who is in Sloppy Joe ?
Sloppy Joeについて教えて下さい。
Hitoshi Oka : 僕が以前やっていたmy coffee momentの活動終了後、ソロ活動として始めたのがSloppy Joeで、初めは一人で宅録で作った曲をカセットにしました。そのカセットを聞いてくれた友達が主催するイベントでライブをしないかと誘ってくれたのをきっかけに、メンバーを集めてバンドとしてライブをするようになりました。その時のメンバーは、my coffee momentでも一緒に活動していたTakeyoshi Kikuchi(Drums)と、現メンバーでもあるHisashi Iwabuchi(Bass)と僕の３人編成でした。まだオリジナル曲も少なかったから、The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy、The Lilac Time、The Beautiful Southの曲をカバーしたのを今でも覚えています。その後、Yuji Satomi(Guitar)、Takashi Kobayashi(Trumpet)をメンバーに加え、2005年に7インチシングル「Trying To Be Funny」を発売。その翌年、ミニアルバム「Trying To Be Funny」をリリースしました。そう、この記念すべきミニアルバムのリリースは、Anorak CrumbleのToshikoが当時主催していたRosemary Recordsからでした。またこうやって新作のリリースでインタビューをしてくれるなんて、とても嬉しく思っています。
このアルバムのリリース後、Yuji Satomi、Takeyoshi Kikuchiのに代わって、my coffee momentのギタリストだったRiichiro Sato(Guitar)とRyuji Kimura(Drums)が加入。7インチシングル「Portrait」を発売。そして、2011年にフルアルバム「With Kisses Four」をWhite Lilly Recordsからリリースしました。このアルバムに収録の「Sometimes」では、現メンバーでWack Wack Rhythm BandのメンバーでもあるTomoko Kunimi(Trumpet)がサポートメンバーとして参加していて、この直後から現在のメンバー編成になっています。現メンバーは、Hitoshi Oka(Vocal,Guitar)、Riichiro Sato(Guitar)、Hisashi Iwabuchi(Bass)、Ryuji Kimura(Drums)、Tomoko Kunimi(Trumpet)。2013年リリースの7インチシングル「Once And For All」をリリース後、だいぶ時間がかかってしまったけど、フルアルバムとしては2枚目（ミニアルバムを含めて3枚目）となる「Waiting For The Night Begins」のリリースにやっとたどり着きました。
Hitoshi Oka : Firstly Sloppy Joe was a solo project of mine after My Coffee Moment split up. I recorded some songs at home and made a cassette. My friend who loved this asked me to play a gig for his club party. So I collected members and formed a band to play. The members were me, Takeyoshi Kikuchi (Drums) and Hisashi Iwabuchi (Bass) at that time. We played cover songs of The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy, The Lilac Time and The Beautiful South because we had not enough original songs then. Later Yuji Satomi (Guitar) and Takashi Kobayashi (Trumpet) joined the band and we released 7 inch single of "Trying To Be Funny" in 2005. We also released the mini-album "Trying To Be Funny" on Toshiko's (Apple Crumble Record) Rosemary Records in 2006. We are very happy Toshiko has an interview with us for our new album. Yuji Satomi and Takeyoshi Kikuchi left the band and Riichiro Sato (Guitar, ex-My Coffee Moment) and Ryuji Kimura (Drums) joined the band after we released this mini-album. We released 7 inch single "Portrait" and the debut full-album "With Kisses Four" on White Lilly Records. Tomoko Kunimi (Trumpet, Wack Wack Rhythm Band ) joined as a support member for the song "Sometimes". Now he is a current member of Sloppy Joe with Hitoshi Oka (Vocals,Guitar), Riichiro Sato (Guitar), Hisashi Iwabuchi (Bass), Ryuji Kimura (Drums), Tomoko Kunimi (Trumpet). It took such long time to release new stuff since we released 7 inch single "Once And For All" in 2003 but finally we will be able to release our second full album "Waiting For The Night Begins" soon.
Anorak Crumble : How would you describe the music of Sloppy Joe ? What are the bands/artists that influenced you ?
Sloppy Joeの音楽について説明して下さい。どんなバンド / アーティストに影響を受けていますか？
Hitoshi Oka : Sloppy Joeの曲は、全て僕が作曲しています。基本的には、Postcard、Cherry Red、Creation、Rough Trade、Go!Discs、53rd&3rd、Subway Organization、Sarahといったレーベルのバンドたちに大きな影響を受けていると思います。特にOrange Juice、Aztec Camera、The Go-BetweensといったPostcardからもリリースしていたバンドには一番影響を受けていますね。もちろんThe smithsやThe trashcan sinatrasも影響を受けたバンドです。
単にインディ・ポップということではなく、いろいろなジャンルのエッセンスも取り入れて自らのスタイルを確立していった上記のバンドたちからの影響が僕たちの音楽にとっては重要だと思っています。
Hitoshi Oka : I write / compose all songs of Sloppy Joe. Basically my songs are influenced by the bands from Postcard, Cherry Red, Creation, Rough Trade, Go! Discs, 53rd & 3rd, Subway Organization, Sarah Records, I suppose. Especially heavily influenced by the bands like Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, The Go-Betweens on Postcard Records as well as The Smiths and Trashcan Sinatras. These bands are very important for me because their sounds have originality, blended various kind of musical essence, not simply indie pop.
Anorak Crumble : The new album "Waiting For The Night Begins" will be released on CD and vinyl from Fastcut Records on the 2nd of July. Also the first album "With Kisses Four" will be re-issued on vinyl. Please tell us about the new album (ex. about recording, unique episodes etc).
ニュー・アルバム"Waiting For The Night Begins"は、7月2日にCD / VinylでFastcut Recordsさんからリリースされる予定ですね？ファースト・アルバム"With Kisses Four"はアナログでリイシューされる予定だそうですが、アルバムについて教えて下さい(レコーディングやユニークなエピソード等々)。
Hitoshi Oka : Fastcut Recordsさんの主催するイベントにライブ出演させてもらったりと以前から繋がりがありましたが、Fastcut Recordsで働くやっているMilesApart Recordsから、僕のソロプロジェクトIvory Pastを2016年にリリースし、その後Sloppy Joeのアルバムリリースについて相談したところ、快くリリースしてくれることになりました。初めは新作のアルバムのリリースだけでしたが、僕たちは以前から”With Kisses Four”をアナログLP化したいということを望んでいたので、それを実現してくれることにもなりました。メンバーがLPサイズのジャケットを欲しいっていう願望が一番の理由だったかもしれません。アルバムのリリースが決まる前からレコーディングを行っていましたが、いつもレコーディングにとても長く時間がかかってしまうのは、反省しないといけないですね。何年もの間、「アルバムリリースに向けて準備中です」とライブで言い続けてきたので、やっとリリースできることになってとても嬉しいし、とてもほっとしています。
Hitoshi Oka : We played gigs for the events which were organized by Fastcut Records before. Also my solo project Ivory Past released the stuff on Miles Apart Records run by Atsushi Murakami of Fastcut Records. So I asked about releasing our new album to Fastcut Records. Firstly we signed with them for our new album only, but later we decided to release vinyl version of our last album "With Kisses Four" too because the band members of Sloppy Joe want a record sleeve of LP size. We should consider about our recording because it always takes a long time. Everytime we say "we are preparing for the new album" at our gigs so we are really happy to release new album finally, feel very relieved too.
Anorak Crumble : Who writes the lyrics and what are they talking about ?
歌詞は誰が書いていますか？どんなことを歌っていますか？
Hitoshi Oka : 歌詞も僕が書いています。普段の風景などから感じたこと、イメージした情景やその情景と重なる自分の内面的なものを現していることが多いですね。特にメッセージ性が強いものではないですが。
Hitoshi Oka : I write the lyrics too. About my feelings from my ordinary life, views of my images and expressions of my mind... Nothing special kind of strong messages something like that...
Anorak Crumble : When did you start to listen to indie pop music ?
いつ頃からインディ・ポップを聴き始めましたか？
Hitoshi Oka : 僕がインディ・ポップを聴き始めたきっかけは、高校時代の1995年頃です。日本でいう「Neo Acoustic」という言葉は以前から雑誌などで聞いたことがありましたが、TV番組でいろんな音楽ジャンルが紹介される中にそれが紹介されていました。もちろんその代表バンドとして紹介されていたのはOrange Juiceだったと記憶しています。それがきっかけで、彼らのアルバムを聞きました。Orange JuiceのCDには、Flippers Guitarが書いたネオアコ通信が付いていて、そこにはLa’sやThe Pale Fountainsなどが紹介されていたんじゃないかと思います。当時は今と違ってあまり情報がなかったので、そういった情報を持ってレコードを探し始めました。僕は東京ではなく、栃木県に住んでいたので宇都宮のWarszawaでFelt、The Monochrome Setなどのレコードを買ったのもよく憶えています。高校生時代にはFeltのジャケットをコピーしてクリアファイルに貼りつけて使っていましたね。ちょうどその頃リリースされたThe Trash Can Sinatrasの”Happy Pocket”にそこで出会ったのも、僕にとってはとても大きな出会いだったと思っています。僕はその頃音楽雑誌の表紙を飾っていたOASIS、BLURや KULA SHAKERなどにはあまり興味がわかなくて（多少聴いたりはしたけど）、それよりもこれらのバンドに出会えたことが今の活動に大きな影響を与えていると思っています。
Hisashi Iwabuchi : 80年代からインディー・ポップを聴いてましたが、90年代にレコード屋で働いていた時が一番聴いていた気がします。毎週新作の7インチ盤がイギリス、ドイツ、アメリカ等から届くのが楽しくて。Fierce Panda Recordsの7インチ盤コンピで旬のバンド情報収集したり、Little Teddy Recordingsや、レーベルがディストリビュートしてたPerfect Pop Recordsのバンドや界隈を追っかけたり。
Hitoshi Oka : I started to listen to indie pop in 1995, when I was a high school student. I have already read about "Neo Aco (it's Japanese-English word.. It means indie pop, twee pop, guitar pop..)" in the music magazines. Then TV show introduced the bands like Orange Juice so I listened to their albums. "Neo Aco communication " paper, written by Flipper's Guitar was attached with Orange Juice CD. They introduced the bands like The La's and Pale Fountains. So I started to find their records. I lived in Tochigi-prefecture at that time. So I bought records of Felt, Monochrome Set, etc. at Warszawa record shop in Utsunomiya. And I used a clear file for study, putting on a copy of the record sleeve of Felt when I was a high school student. Also The Trash Can Sinatras "Happy Pocket" album was very important for me at that time. I was not interested in kind of Brit pop bands which became a cover of music magazine like Oasis, Blur, Kula Shaker, etc. (I listened to a little)
Hisashi Iwabuchi : I have been listening to indie pop since the 80's. Especially I listened a lot when I worked at Vinyl Japan record shop in the 90's. I was really looking forward to the new 7 inch records from UK, Germany, USA, etc. every week. I really enjoyed to find nice new bands from the compilations on Fierce Panda Records, also I listened to Little Teddy Recordings, Perfect Pop Records, etc.
Anorak Crumble : What are your favourite bands of all time ?
あなたのお気に入りのバンドは？
Hitoshi Oka :もちろん僕にとってのお気に入りはいつまでもOrange Juice、The Go-Betweens、FeltやThe Trash Can Sinatrasなどですね。The Orchids、Brighter、The Field MiceなどのSarahのバンドたちも大好きです。僕はいつも最新の音楽を探し求めている訳ではないので、僕が気に入っているバンドは、これらのバンドからの影響を感じるバンドばかりで、ここ数年でのお気に入りは、The Pale Lightsが一番ですね。
Riichiro Sato : 自分はやはりThe Smithsが好きですね。16歳のときに友人からTAB譜を見せてもらって弾いた曲は「Frankly,Mr.Shankly」だったし、ほぼリアルタイムで”Meat is murder”や”The Queen Is Dead”を聴いてしまったのは、自分の人生や考え方、出す音に非常に大きな影響を及ぼしたのかな、って思っています。今回のアルバムでもほとんどの録音は、メインのRickenbacker#330を弾いてるんですが、そのギターを買った理由もJohnny Marr とThe JamのPaul Wellerが弾いてる姿に惹かれたというのが大きかったです。そのあと、Smithsフォロワーとよばれる(言われる側はよくは思ってないかもしれませんが)ような80年代から今にいたるインディーバンドを聞いてきましたが、単純に音が好きというのもありますし、自分の中ではすごくSympathyを感じてしまっています。思い入れというのもあって、初めてヴォーカルの岡と出会った頃(my coffee momentに加入したころ)は、深夜のスタジオリハーサルの後、よく彼の家に泊っていたこともあったのですが、そのとき聞かせてもらったのは、Jazz butcher conspiracy, The Brilliant Corners , episode four , desert wolvesなど今でも好きなバンドです。最近だと、Proctors ,real estate , Alvvays, Ice Choir , capturedtracks関連(単純にwild nothingだったりしますが・・)は好きでよく聞いています。ちょっと前だったらcraft spels , Northern Portrait , veronica falls(フロントアクトをやらせてもらったのはいい思い出です)はギターの音が好きですね。なんとなく自分のPedal(エフェクター)にもそのような影響がでていると思います。
Hisashi Iwabuchi : お気に入りバンドはいっぱいあるのですが、特に中高校の時に聴いたAztec camera”High Land, Hard Rain”、squeeze“play”、XTCのシングル集”the compact”、The Jamの作品全般が好きな音楽の原点なのかな。今でも余り変わって無いです。最近だとGangway“Whatever it is”のリリースが嬉しかったです。
Hitoshi Oka : My favourite bands are Orange Juice, The Go-Betweens, Felt, The Trash Can Sinatras all the time, off course. Also I really love the bands of Sarah Records like The Orchids, Brighter, The Field Mice... I don't look for good new bands so often... But The Pale Lights is the best new band for me at the moment.
Riichiro Sato : The best band is The Smiths for me. I played "Frankly, Mr.Shankly" when I was 16 years old and my friend showed me the tablature. I listened to the Smiths' songs like "Meat is murder" and "The Queen Is Dead" in the 80's. Heavily influenced by this experience... It changed my life and established the style of my guitar-play. I played guitar Rickenbacker#330 in our new album, as always. I bought it because Johnny Marr and Paul Weller of The Jam played this. I have listened to indie pop bands which are called kind of "The Smiths-follower" since the 80's. Simply I just love the sound like that and I feel kind of sympathy too. I used to stay Hitoshi's home often when I met him (My Coffee Moment-era) for the first time and rehearsed at the studio until the mid-night. We used to listen to Jazz Butcher Conspiracy, The Brilliant Corners, Episode Four, The Desert Wolves, etc. in his room. I still love them. Also I listen to new bands like The Proctors, Real Estate, Alvvays, Ice Choir, Captured Tracks Records (Wild Nothing, mainly), Craft Spells, Northern Portrait, Veronica Falls (we supported them before. It's good memory for me). I love their guitar sound. My pedal effect sound is influenced by them.
Hisashi Iwabuchi : There are a lot of my favourite bands. Especially Aztec Camera "High Land, Hard Rain", Squeeze "Play", XTC's single compilation "The compact", all the stuff from The Jam etc. Nothing to change, I still love of them. Recently I was happy to listen to new Gangway "Whatever it is (2019)" album.
Anorak Crumble : What do you think about indie pop all around the world at the moment ?
現在の世界中のインディ・ポップについて、どう思いますか？
Hitoshi Oka : インディ・ポップは、いつだって僕を楽しませてくれているし、いつまでも良いバンドが生まれていると感じています。
いろんな音楽を聴いても、やっぱり僕にとってはインディ・ポップが一番好きなんだなっていつも思います。最近は、East Village、The Springfields、Blueboy、Dolly Mixtureなど、たくさんの良いバンドの音源がまたリリースされていますが、そういったことも新しいインディ・ポップバンドが生まれるきっかけになってくれていると思っています。Firestation Recordsのように、全く知らなかった80年代のインディ・ポップバンドの音源をリリースしてくれることも僕にとってはとても嬉しいことですね。
Hitoshi Oka : Indie pop makes me happy all the time. There are good bands anytime, forever. Indie pop is the best for me, always. Recently I listen to re-issue of East Village, The Springfields, Blueboy, Dolly Mixture, etc. I hope it will be nice start to play for new bands. Also I am very happy Firestation Records introduce and release such nice obscure indie pop bands from the 80's.
Anorak Crumble : How is your life in Tokyo ? Are there any good record labels, clubs etc ?
東京での生活はどんな感じですか？良いレーベルやクラブはありますか？
Hitoshi Oka : 子供が生まれてからはあまりたくさんのライブやクラブには行っていないですが、日本にもたくさんの良いレーベルやバンドがいると思っています。でも、最近は僕のお気に入りにあげているようなバンドのスタイルに通じるバンドにあまり出会えていないので、もしそういったバンドを知っている人がいたら是非教えてもらいたいです。最近のクラブでのDJイベントでは、インディポップに特化したイベントが行われているのかわからないけど、LITEN BUTIKENで僕が毎月DJしていたFlesh of My Fleshは、お店の再開と共にまたやりたいと思っています。今の世間の状況が良くなったらまたお店も再開するはずだから。
Hitoshi Oka : Recently I don't go to clubs and gigs very often since we have a baby. I suppose there are still a lot of nice record labels and bands in Japan. But I can't meet the bands which have a musical taste of my favourite bands like Orange Juice, etc. So let me know if someone knows about good Japanese bands like that. I hope to continue my DJ party "Flesh of My Flesh" every month when our shop Liten Butiken will re-open. I am sure we will do it again if the situation (Corona) gets better soon.
Anorak Crumble : Any future plans with Sloppy Joe ?
Sloppy Joeの今後の予定はありますか？
Hitoshi Oka : ７月に新作アルバムのリリースと前作アルバムのアナログ化が決まっていますが、それ以外はまだ何も決まっていないですね。是非リリースを記念したライブをしたいと思っていますが、今は早くそれができることを願うしかないですね。アルバムリリースに合わせて、何か音源、動画、グッズなどについてお知らせできたらなぁと思っています。Ivory Pastでは、今年の3月にBlue-Very Labelからスプリットカセットをリリースしていて、その後も新しい曲を作っているところなので、今年またリリースのお知らせができたら嬉しいです。
Hitoshi Oka : As I mentioned just before, we will release the new album and LP version of "With Kisses Four" in July 2020. We hope we can play gigs for the new stuff someday. Also we would like to announce some songs, videos, goods, etc for our fans. Ivory Past released a split cassette on Blue-Very label in March 2020 and now I am writing new songs. I am happy if I can release something within this year.

Hitoshi Oka : 前作から９年という長い時間がかかってしまったけど、前作と同じくインディ・ポップファンに気に入ってもらえたら嬉しし、前作を聴いていない方にも是非リマスタリングされたアナログLPで一緒に聴いて欲しいです。世界がこんな状況だけど、僕たちの音楽で少しでも楽しんでもらえたら嬉しいです。
Hitoshi Oka : It has been nine years but I am happy if indie pop fans listen to our new album as well as our last album, remastered and LP version. Happy if people enjoy our music.
