Anorak Crumble : How is your life in Singapore ?
シンガポールでの生活はどんな感じですか？良いレーベルやクラブはありますか？
Raphael Michael Ong : Life in Singapore can sometimes seem awfully quiet from the outside, but underneath it's pristine exterior lies a small but exciting DIY music scene growing bigger and bigger every day that I'm incredibly thankful for.
シンガポールでの生活は時に酷く静かなものだよ。小さいけど、DIYのミュージック・シーンは自然に存在し毎日大きく大きくなっているので、信じられないほど感謝しています。
Anorak Crumble : Are there any good record labels, clubs etc ?
良いレーベルやクラブなどはありますか？
Raphael Michael Ong : KITCHEN. LABEL is my favourite record label in Singapore - they release ambient and modern classical music from Singapore and around the world. Another label that's really central to the DIY scene here is Lithe Records, which releases artists like sub:shaman and Forests. They also run a tiny, but incredibly important venue called Lithe House, where many sweaty but memorable nights were spent. On the newer side, our friends at Tired Records are wonderful too ! They've recently just released a compilation of my favourite Singaporean DIY bands covering each other's songs called Pick of The Lot ! Our very own Cosmic Child even contributed an amazing cover to the album. Unfortunately, Singapore doesn't have many small-to-mid sized venues, and we've been seeing all our favourite venues close down one by one as the years go by...

LABELは僕のお気に入りのシンガポールのレコード・レーベルです。シンガポールや世界中の、アンビエントやモダン・クラシカル・ミュージックをリリースしています。他のDIYを感じるレーベルで中心的なのはLithe Recordsだ、sub:shamanやForestsといったバンドをリリースしている。また彼らは、小さいけど重要なLithe Houseというライブ・ハウスを経営している、汗だくだったけど記念すべき夜を過ごしたよ。新しめの所では、僕達の友達のTired Recordsも素晴らしいよ！彼らは最近、シンガポールのDIYバンド達のコンピレーションをリリースした、お互いにカバーし合った"Pick of The Lot"! を。僕達のバンドCosmic Childがアルバムに参加しています。残念なことに、シンガポールでは小～中規模のライブ・ハウスが無いし、少しずつ年々クローズしている。
Anorak Crumble : Do you know Singaporean label Fruit Records in 00's and great bands like Serenaide ?
00年代のシンガポールのFruit RecordsやSerenaideというバンドは知っていますか？
Raphael Michael Ong : I think I was still in primary school when Fruit Records was in its heyday, so I've never had the chance to be at one of their shows, but their legacy lives on till this today. I remember Serenaide soundtracking many of my teenage years, and we're all also huge fans of Ferns (released on Fruit Records in 2007) here. Some of us even made the trip up to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last year to catch Ferns' reunion show !
まだ僕は小学生だったよ、Fruit Recordsが全盛期の頃は。なので、彼らのショウへは行く機会が無かった。だけど彼らの遺産はまだ今日まで引き継がれている。Serenaideは僕が十代の頃のサウンドトラックだったしFerns(2007年にFruit Recordsからリリースした)の大ファンだよ。去年、僕達の何人かが、マレーシアのクアラルンプールへFernsの再結成ショウへ行ったよ。
Anorak Crumble : Please tell us about the story of birth of Middle Class Cigars Records. Why did you decided to start the label ?
Middle Class Cigars Recordsの誕生ストーリーを教えて下さい。何故レーベルをスタートすると決めたのですか？
Raphael Michael Ong : I’ve always been a fan ! It started with me being a huge fan of the music around me, and I wanted to be able to find way to contribute and give back to the scene. It began with me helping out through taking pictures, making videos, designing things for my friends' bands, but I slowly started to dream about taking things to a new level - to build worlds and stories around the music I loved. I thought the most exciting bands back then were Subsonic Eye and Cosmic Child, and I wanted to work with them somehow. But it turns out... someone beat me to it ! It was mysterious label called Middle Class Cigars. By some divine alignment of stars, I somehow met (my now good friend) Nigel at a show I was shooting, and we began talking about the music we loved, and I found out that he was behind the label ! One thing led to another, and somehow we decided to work together on Middle Class Cigars, running it alongside each other to help the bands we loved and believed in get the attention and love they deserve. That was what we believed in - that there’s so many amazing bands out there that deserve so much more, and we wanted to help bring them to a bigger audience that would love them as much as we did. Nigel now runs ambient/experimental label Evening Chants, bringing this same philosophy into the work that he does there.
僕はいつでもファンなんだよ。僕を取りまく音楽の大ファンで、助ける方法を見つけたかった。バンドの為に、写真を撮ったり、ビデオを作ったり、デザインしたり。だけど僕は、次のレベルへ進む為に、ゆっくりと始めたんだよ。当時、最もエキサイティングなバンドは、Subsonic EyeとCosmic Childだった、何とか彼らとやりたかった、やれたんだよ！レーベル名をMiddle Class Cigarsと呼ぶのはミステリアスだった。ショウでNigel(今は良い友達だ)と会って、僕達は好きな音楽について話し始めた。彼とレーベルやるのは良いかなと思った！僕達が好きなバンドの為に、彼とMiddle Class Cigarsをやることにした。もっと取り扱わるべき沢山の良いバンドが居る。もっと沢山のオーディエンスへ聴いてもらう為にヘルプしたかった。Nigelは今アンビエント / エクスペリメントなレーベルEvening Chantsを運営している。同じ哲学を持ってやっているよ。

Middle Class Cigars Records所属のCosmic Child, Handsome Girl, Sobs, Grrrl Gang, Subsonic Eye, The Buildingsについて教えて下さい。
Raphael Michael Ong : I think the music speaks for itself, and it’s so difficult to express their music in my words without things sounding like a press release. They’re all bands that I love very very much, that I greatly believe in. I’m very thankful to have had a part to play in their releases, and I’ll always be rooting for them through thick and thin.
Cosmic Child and Subsonic Eye rose from the same scene, at the same time in 2016 - they were all classmates at a music course they were studying in school, and bonded over their love of shoegaze and indie rock. They were incredibly refreshing at that time, bringing a raw yet warm and intimate emotion into the then sleek and polished Singapore music landscape through their own unique takes on shoegaze and dream pop.
Handsome Girl is a project started by then Glasgow-based artist Aki Hassan, who was back for a couple of months in Singapore, where we took the chance to work on an album together. We all pitched in on that project, with Jared and I from Sobs on guitar, Bo from Cosmic Child on bass, and Lucas from Subsonic Eye on drums. The album explores subjects like identity, sexuality and longing through painfully honest songwriting alongside jagged, odd guitar lines and textures. It’s one of my favourite releases on the label, and I think everyone should listen to it.
Sobs makes uncool pop music inspired by 90's and 00's indie rock and indie pop. Jared and Celine from the band are bona fide pop geniuses, and everything they’ve put out have been equal parts catchy as it is inventive.
Grrrl Gang is a band from Yogyakarta, Indonesia that’s part of Kolibri Rekords, our friends from Jakarta that we’ve had the privilege of working together with over the years. In 2018, we brought Grrrl Gang down to Singapore, alongside Bedchamber and Gizpel for a Kolibri Rekords showcase. We loved their music, and wanted to find a way to introduce them to our audience in Singapore and the label's fanbase around the world before the show. We released a limited run of cassettes of their album "Stop This Madness", and it all sold out within a few hours ! Their music reminds me of classic Sarah Records bands in UK like Talulah Gosh and Heavenly, and I was so happy to see audiences around South-East Asia reacting so positively to them.
The Buildings is one of my favourite bands from the Philippines. They played at Sobs and Subsonic Eye's first show in Manila, and the moment I saw the set I knew I wanted to work with them at some point. I kept in contact with Mariah from the band over the years, and in late 2019 I finally had the chance to bring them in to Singapore for a party we were putting up. Just like for Grrrl Gang, I wanted to find a way to introduce them to the label’s audience in Singapore around the world before the show, and we decided to re-release their album alongside a new music video, bonus track and zine. Their set ended up being a blast in Singapore, with a mosh-pit going for every song, and I was so happy !
彼らの音楽を僕の言葉で表現するのは難しい、プレス・リリースのように音無しでは…。僕が大好きで信じているバンド達で、感謝しているし応援している。Cosmic ChildとSubsonic Eyeは2016年あたりのシーンに居て、学校の音楽コースのクラスメイトだった。シューゲイズとインディ・ロックを繋いでいて新鮮だった。Handsome GirlはグラスゴーのAki Hassanによるプロジェクトで、何ヵ月かの間シンガポールに来ていてアルバムを制作する機会がありました。SobsのギタリストJaredと私、Cosmic ChildのベースBoとSubsonic EyeのドラムLucasで取り組んだ。アルバムは、アイデンティティーとセクシャリティー、ペインフルで正直なソングライティング、変わったギター・ラインとテキストが羅列されている。僕のお気に入りのリリースの一つだよ、聴くべきです。Sobsは90～00年代のインディ・ロック～ポップに影響を受けた、アンクールなポップ・ミュージック。
バンドのJaredとCelineは、正真正銘のポップ・ジニアス。Grrrl GangはインドネシアのYogyakarta出身で、ジャカルタのKolibri Rekordsに所属している。2018年にシンガポールでGrrrl Gangを買った、BedchamberとGizpelも、Kolibri Rekordsのショウケースで。彼らの音楽は素晴らしかったので、シンガポールで紹介したかった。カセット・アルバム“Stop This Madness”をリリースしたら、2～3時間で売りきれたよ！彼らの音楽はSarah RecordsのTalulah GoshやHeavenlyみたいで、南東アジアのオーディエンスが良い反応をしてくれて嬉しかった。The Buildingsはフィリピン出身のお気に入りバンド。マニラでSobsとSubsonic Eye’sの初めてのショウで一緒にプレイした。何年もに渡ってバンドのMariahとコンタクトを取っていた。Grrrl Gangと同じように、シンガポールのオーディエンスに紹介したかったので、彼らのアルバムを、新しいビデオとボーナス・トラックとジン付きで再リリースした。彼らのセットで、どの曲でもモッシュしてくれたので、とてもハッピーだった！
Anorak Crumble : When did you start to listen to indie pop music ?
何時からインディ・ポップを聴き始めましたか？
Raphael Michael Ong : I don’t remember when I first listened to indie pop - maybe it was Camera Obscura's "My Maudlin Career" or Best Coast's "Crazy For You", but I think I started to really get into the genre and wanted to be part of it after I listened to Alvvays' self-titled album in 2014. Before that, my first love in music was a post-rock/math-rock band I unknowingly stumbled upon called El Ten Eleven, and that made me pick up the guitar when I was much younger.
初めてインディ・ポップを聴いた時のことは思い出せない。Camera Obscura’s “My Maudlin Career”やBest Coast’s “Crazy For You"だったかな。Alvvaysのセルフ・タイトルのアルバムを2014年に聴いて以来、このジャンルにのめり込んで、その一部になりたかった。それまでは、ポスト・ロックやマス・ロック・バンドが最初に好きだった、El Ten Elevenを偶然見つけて。僕がもっと若かった時に、ギターをピック・アップさせてくれるような。
Anorak Crumble : Sobs played with Japanese indie pop band For Tracy Hyde. Do Singaporean bands often come to Japan to play gigs ?
Sobsは日本のインディ・ポップ・バンドFor Tracy Rideと一緒にプレイしましたね。バンドは頻繁に日本へ来てギグを行うのですか？
Raphael Michael Ong : Sometimes ! Singapore is a small country, so there aren’t many bands here to begin with, and much fewer that tour internationally, but there have been more and more Singaporean bands making it to Japan as our scene grows in International relevance. For example, just as Cosmic Child was having their Japan tour with Hong Kong’s Thud, Singapore’s cult-following emo bands Forests and Terrible People were also having a Japan tour at the same time, on the exact same dates ! We ended up meeting up for drinks in izakayas around Shibuya on a couple of the nights, introducing our Japanese friends in the shoegaze/dream pop scene to the emo scene and vice versa. It was lots of fun !
時々ね。シンガポールは小さな国で、スタートする多くのバンドは居なかった。国際的にツアーするバンドは少し居た。国際的な関連性の中で僕達のシーンが日本で成功している。例えば、Cosmic Childが香港のThudとジャパン・ツアーをやった時に、シンガポールのカルトなエモ・バンドForests and Terrible Peopleは、同じ時期に同じ日にジャパン・ツアーをやっていた！何日か渋谷の居酒屋で飲んで、僕達の日本の友達のシューゲイズ / ドリーム・ポップ・シーン、エモ・シーンを紹介することは、とても楽しいよ！
Anorak Crumble : What are your favourite bands of all time ?
あなたのお気に入りのバンドは？
Raphael Michael Ong : It’s difficult to come up with a comprehensive list, because I listen to so much music and discover a new favourite band of all time every day, but I think Advantage Lucy is my favourite band of all time. Alvvays comes in a close second, followed by Camera Obscura. For Tracy Hyde and Great Grandpa are bands that mean a lot to me too.
包括的なリストになってしまい難しい。何故なら僕は沢山の音楽を聴いていて、毎日何時でも新しいお気に入りのバンドを発見しているから。Advantage Lucyは僕のオール・タイム・フェイバリット、次にAlvvaysやCamera Obscuraが続く。For Tracy HydeとGreat Grandpaも。
Anorak Crumble : What do you think about indie pop all around the world at the moment ?
現在の世界中のインディ・ポップについて、どう思いますか？
Raphael Michael Ong : I think indie pop has been on an upward trajectory over the past few years, slowly creeping into the mainstream consciousness - with even massive bands like The 1975 dipping their toes into 90's-inspired jangly, dreamy guitar pop songs, and a slew of some of indie music’s biggest bands being inspired by indie pop (Frankie Cosmos, Snail Mail, Jay Som). The question lies in what comes next. How will the genre evolve and be reinvented to capture a new audience ? Perhaps a part of this question has been answered by younger artists like Clairo, Boy Pablo, SALES and Beabadoobee bringing the sound to a younger, newer crowd, but what lies beyond ?
インディ・ポップは、ここ何年か上向きの軌道に向かっていると思う、メインストリームになりつつある。The 1975は90年代にインスパイアされたジャングリーでドリーミーなギター・ポップ・ソングに浸っていて。沢山のインディ・ミュージックの有名なバンド達はインディ・ポップにインスパイアされている(Frankie Cosmos, Snail Mail, Jay Som)。将来はどうなるの？Clairo, Boy Pablo, SALES, beabadoobeeといった若手が応えてくれて、やってくれるでしょう。
Anorak Crumble : What are your favourite record labels ?
あなたのお気に入りのレコード・レーベルは？
Raphael Michael Ong : Polyvinyl Records is my favourite record label of all time because they consistently release some of the most interesting artists in indie rock and I dream to have one of our bands signed under them one day. Double Double Whammy is an important purveyor of modern indie pop and bedroom pop over the past few years, and they were a big inspiration for the work I do with the bands on Middle Class Cigars. I love Merge Records, Darla Records, and 4AD, of course, Sarah Records, but who doesn’t ? I’m also a big fan of the labels active in the Shibuya-kei movement in the 90's - Trattoria, Escalator Records, Crue-L Records, Readymade Records - because of their masterful use of visuals that bring a whole new dimension into the music they release. Special mention to Fastcut Records in Osaka - they run my favourite record store in the world.
Polyvinyl Recordsはいつだって大好き。インディ・ロックの興味深いバンド達を一貫してリリースしている。いつか僕のレーベルのバンドが契約出来たらいいな。Double Double Whammyレーベルは、2～3年くらい前に出来たモダンなインディ・ポップ / ベッドルーム・ポップ・レーベル。Middle Class Cigarsの中でも多大なインスピレーションがある。Merge Records, Darla Records, 4ADも好きだ。90年代の渋谷系ムーブメントも… Trattoria, Escalator Records, Crue-L Records, Readymade Recordsなど。何故なら見事なビジュアルが新しい次元に導いてくれたから。大阪のFastcut Recordsも特別だ。彼らはレコード店も運営している。
Anorak Crumble : Can you tell us about future releases ?
今後の予定を教えて下さい。
Raphael Michael Ong : Sobs and Subsonic Eye are releasing new full-length albums this year, and we can’t wait to show that to the world. Both albums are almost done, and you can definitely expect them towards the second half of the year !
SobsとSubsonicは新しいフル・レングス・アルバムを今年リリースする予定です。待ちきれないよ。両者共に殆どアルバムを仕上げていて、今年後半に聴くことが出来るでしょう！
